Ferns, a charming town located in north County Wexford, Ireland, is steeped in history and is situated just 11 km north of Enniscorthy. The town is home to the remains of Ferns Castle, which was constructed around 1220. However, during Cromwell's campaign, the castle was destroyed by parliamentarians who also carried out mass executions of the local population. This adds a layer of historical significance to this picturesque Irish town.

The National Design and Craft Gallery showcases the latest Irish crafts and international designs. The space is available for exhibitions and events, and features a variety of creative products from ceramic ware to furniture. Special family days are held every month with interactive workshops for kids.

The National Design & Craft Gallery is actually a small space within The Castle Yard in Kilkenny. When we were in town, they had a great display by The Irish Woodturners Guild where members had created pieces with moving parts turned from wood. In the back room they displayed some of the tools and information on the craft of woodturning. Really enjoyed this small, but unique display.

Amazing and beautifully made shops with Irish products, from ceramics to soap, jewelry, rugs etc. Staff is really friendly!

Hannah ( — Google review

This is a cool little place to walk through. The artisan shops are wonderful! The silversmith was hands down our favorite. To see a gentleman that passionate about his craft for as long as he has been at it was the best! He was fantastic to talk to!

Catherine R — Google review

Clothing stores and eating areas. Most importantly it has free bathrooms right next to the castle. Thank you for that!

Lovely little galleries with beautiful pieces of art and craft

One can spend hours in this one location. All artisans make their own crafts. Workshops available with many. We spent the better part

Ginger B — Google review

Well, the name suggested something of Ireland-wide national relevance and origin to me.I think this is misleading and it feels more like a few local craftsmen coming together in one nice & atmospheric place to attract more attention and customers.Nothing wrong with this, but I think a more appropriate name would be Kilkenny Design & Craft Shoppe / Market 😊

Klaus K — Google review

Wandered over on a whim while exploring Kilkenny. Nice collection of shops. Grabbed a piece of souvenir artwork at a reasonable price. The shops seem to run a wide gamut with respect to cost.

The National Reptile Zoo is a zoo in Kilkenny City, Ireland that houses snakes, crocodiles, and other reptiles. It is open 10 am to 6 pm seven days a week year-round and has over 50 exhibits. The zoo has animal encounter zones every hour and staff are great and knowledgeable about the animals.

Fantastic morning spent at the reptile zoo. The staff were so knowledgeable, friendly and patient with ALL the kids questions. Lovely to see people enjoying their work and bringing their personality to the experience. My kids 3+5 yrs old loved their time at the zoo. They were thrilled to hold and touch some animals during the animal encounter session as well as learn lots of information. A must visit with smallies and reptile enthusiasts. 🦎

Erinn S — Google review

Lovely place to spend an hour or two. It's indoor, so you can visit throughout the year. Snakes were the highlight among other reptiles. The animal encounter session was fantastic. Kids will love this, as they will be allowed to touch some of the animals. It was a lot informative too. Definitely worth visiting..

I would 100% recommend this place to anyone with an interest in reptiles or animals in general. Great place to bring children. We spent about 2 hours here so well worth admission. They bring out some animals for informative talks every hour or so and let you touch/hold them. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The enclosures are spacious for the animals and there is a coffee shop.

Steven C — Google review

Lovely reptile zoo experience. Spacious enough. Nice cokor tones. Cages kept in good condition. Precise information about the animals at the cage. Live experience to touch the snake was the best part.

Great place to spend an hour or two.Kids loved it, I loved it. Staff are great. Very informative and put on regular talks about different residents of the zoo.We had the pleasure of a tarantula, giant snail and tortoise. Holding a tarantula was a first for me. Definitely coming back

This was a spot on family trip. Came there from Limerick as a b-day surprise for our 9year old daughter. She absolutely loved it. Her 3year old brother and ourselves also enjoyed every minute of our time in there. Range of animals is big enough to have a fantastic two hours there. Kids had a chance to hold a real, living snake for a moment which was a great experience. Will definitely be back at some stage. Well worth of seeing.

Sebastian K — Google review

I love reptiles and insects, this place had so many species that you wouldn't see in a everyday zoo. They also done reptile shows that are super informative and sometimes you can hold or touch the animal. It's a great place to go with kids as they also have an indoor play place. These reptiles are also kept in fantastic conditions, they're tanks are spacious and well decorated for the species and they are well looked after. I cannot recommend this place enough for a day out!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the National Reptile Zoo in Kilkenny, and it was truly a fantastic day out for the whole family. Just a quick hour and a half drive from Dublin, the journey was well worth it.Upon arrival, the staff greeted us warmly and provided an informative talk about the various reptiles housed at the zoo. I was particularly impressed by the opportunity to hold a real tarantula - certainly not for the faint-hearted, but a thrilling experience for those brave enough to try it.The zoo boasts a huge variety of reptiles and frogs, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of these unique creatures. Additionally, there is a nice play area for kids, making it an ideal destination for families with young children. Before leaving, we visited the souvenir section where we were able to pick up a memento of our visit, serving as a reminder of the great day we had.Overall, I highly recommend a visit to the National Reptile Zoo in Kilkenny. It's an educational and enjoyable experience that is well worth your time.

Mr F — Google review

Awesome place and a must visit especially if you have kids.. we loved the overall spread and variety (albeit a bit small for the ticket price). The star attractions were the hourly interaction sessions with various reptiles and the staff doing those presentations were fairly knowledgeable too.

There was a huge range of reptiles espacially the different types of snakes and the information about them i.e. origin, venom level and their nature. There were alligators, lizards and turtles too.The most creepy one was the dark room with amphibians like scorpion and spiders.

This place is a hidden gem. Can easily spend 2+ hours in it. Many exotic reptiles to look at and to touch! It has an indoor playground and a safari off road vehicle for the little ones to play. There is a demonstration of some selected reptiles at each whole hour. One is invited to touch them at the session.

Lovely small zoo. Enjoyed the presentations which are held on the hour from 11am on the day we visited. They show 3 different species which vary between each presentation and they allow you to touch them if you wish. Cafe on site.

Abigail P — Google review

Great experience, do recommend if you like reptiles. Also a small area with a slide for children.

Glen M — Google review

My 4-year old and I loved the National Reptile Zoo. I was really impressed by the range of animals, how easy it was to see them in their environments, and the "encounters" where we were able to touch and hear about a tortoise, snake and giant snail. Don't let the industrial estate location put you off - the zoo is well designed and maintained, with a little play area, cafe, and plenty to keep children interested. Would highly recommend when visiting Kilkenny.

Tom W — Google review

This was an amazing experience into the reptile world. It's not very big, but it provides lots of information on the different animals. The animal encounter was really good, the girl explaining was super engaged and great with the kids. Really recommend it.

Luzia L — Google review

Very informative and friendly staff, we liked the varsity of reptiles and their inhabitants. We also enjoyed the hourly sessions to showcase specific reptiles and have the opportunity to have a closer look or even touch some of them. It is a small overall place, but I enjoyed our experience nonetheless.

Mufleh K — Google review

Superb hidden gem. The talks in particular are extremely interesting and informative. If your child is interested in science and animals this is a must visit.

Colm F — Google review

We popped in here after seeing the sign on the motorway. Thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The talk was great and getting to touch a snake was such a highlight for my daughter. Staff were so nice. Can't wait to go again.

Donna B — Google review

We had a VIP lizard encounter with Luca. It was absolutely brilliant, perfect for my 8 and 9 year old. So informative and engaging. Unforgettable experience for them. Then another group talk with some other reptiles and a bull frog. Talks run on the hour. We spent 3 hours at the zoo in all, and had snacks and coffees too. Worth every cent as it goes to keeping the animals in good condition and paying the excellent staff.

We visited the National Reptile Zoo with three kids, aged 9, 8, and 6. Initially, we were skeptical because from the outside, it resembled a car workshop or something similar. We had expected a grand entrance like Fota Zoo, with open space or a park around it. However, once we stepped inside, our perception completely changed. It taught us never to judge a reptile zoo by its exterior! The collection of snakes and other reptiles kept us engaged for a good two hours. There was also a fascinating show-and-tell session about various reptiles, including snakes. The kids asked questions, and the staff happily answered them. We even got to touch a snake and a Komodo dragon. Overall, it was a worthwhile experience, and I highly recommend a visit to the National Reptile Zoo.

Amit B — Google review

Couldn’t fault my experience here in the slightest! It was amazing, we visited on a weekday and it was very quiet which was great for us, it was so clean and well kept a nice little play area for children of all ages. All indoors so a great day out no matter the weather. We paid on arrival and didn’t need to book in advance. We spent a couple of hours here as the kids loved looking at the reptiles! Almost every hour there was an interaction with 3 different reptiles where they could either hold or stroke some of the reptiles.A lovely little gift shop with some very affordable toys and a cafe as well.Staff were very friendly with the kids one staff member in particular stood out the most which was Rachael, she was so attentive and funny with the kids during the interaction and made them so comfortable with the reptiles and always had a funny joke to tell. She was amazing!I highly recommend visiting here and will 100% return again.

Kelly B — Google review

We had a fantastic experience. The staff were very knowledgeable and passionate about the animals, and I learned a lot about these fascinating creatures during my visit. The zoo was well-maintained and clean, and I felt safe and comfortable throughout my time there. I would highly recommend a visit to the National Reptile Zoo for anyone interested in learning more about reptiles.

Huntington Castle & Gardens is a historic castle with lush gardens, a tearoom, and a farm. The castle has been in the same family since it was built in 1625 and offers fascinating tours led by knowledgeable guides who share anecdotes and history. Visitors can explore the sculptural garden, take leisurely walks through the wooded area, and admire the blooming flowers. The property is also home to peacocks freely roaming in the courtyard and sheep grazing in the meadow.

We had an absolutely amazing time staying at Huntington Castle. Lovely host and hostess, spectacular rooms, and truly fantastic gardens. Happened to stay during lambing season, so were able to see a few new ones being born! Highly recommend!!

Stunning venue for a wedding ceremony, this was my 1st time to officiate at the Castle. I will definitely go back to walk around the gardens and visit the tea rooms

Janette W — Google review

Great way to spend an afternoon. We thoroughly enjoyed the castle tour. Our guide was pleasant, efficient and knowledgeable. The rooms of the castle are just gorgeous with some very interesting pieces on display. The fact that the same family have been here since 1625 is amazing. The tearooms are in the courtyard and we enjoyed tea from proper china cups and some delicious carrot cake. We had a lovely walk through the gardens afterwards (to walk off the cake) and visited with the friendly peacocks and chickens. All in all well worth the entry fee and we'll be back another day.

Philomena S — Google review

Beautiful castle with a unique history and stunning grounds. This is a smaller castle than many, but is less crowded and more intimate. Has been owned by the same family since 1625.Small tea room offers coffee, tea, and treats. The peacocks in the court yard love to join you for tea.

Just back from staying in Huntington Castle, we all had such an amazing time. Thanks to Alex and the team for looking after us so well. Check out the tour of the castle, the garden walk, the peacocks, the sheep and lambs, and the beautiful tapestry room. We also went to a restaurant called Sha Roe Bistro, just outside the castle, well worth making a reservation if you are staying in the area. We'll be back for sure...

Absolutely beautiful! The nature was so fascinating, the trees were Huge and felt like you were in a fairytale. The whole place felt magical in some way.My favourite bit was at the side of the garden where there was a slim path that was surrounded by grass and branches so while walking and also crouching through it, it felt like walking in the jungle which I really enjoyedAt the end we stopped by the Tea Room and got some drinksOverall, it's an amazing place to go walking and it's definitely worth going.

We didn't visit the castle itself, as we came after opening hours, but we walked the grounds & had a long walk on local roads, while picking & eating loads of blackberries. The entire village is so cute..👍🇮🇪

Alex and Claire were both not only spectacular hosts but Alex took us o. An engaging tour of their home and castle. Only stayed 1 night but was worth the time to get there and enjoy the castle and property and a lovely breakfast the next morning

Great tour with Peter yesterday. He was very informative and answered any questions asked. Loved seeing the kitchen and the conservatory was beautiful. Reasonably priced tour but would enjoy seeing a bedroom. Peter told us that you can stay in the castle or the houses in the courtyard which is a great option. The garden is really nice and you could smell the roses before you even saw them. Having peacocks, chickens and ducks around were nice touch too. Would recommend visiting and doing the tour.

Andy K — Google review

Wonderful experience, the place is so well kept and the guided tour comes with very intriguing surprises about the family story. The gardens are so relaxing and the coffee shop is very cosy and with quality. Fun to eat with the cute peacocks around.

Evandro L — Google review

The house is steeped in colonialism, and the guide presented that like it was a magnificently wonderful thing. Given this day and age, I had rather hoped for a more “Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” approach to the collections/possessions - not the glorification of shooting reptiles and other wildlife in Colonial India. It’s also worth noting the Orientalism that the place is steeped in; it made my skin crawl. The gardens are alright, but not worth the money by half. The peacocks were cool and kind of saved the trip for me. I’d save yourself the drive (and cash) and head to Altamont Gardens instead.

As a wedding photographer this is one of the most beautiful locations I have ever been to, especially the old church outside. The chateau and gardens are stunning and ideal for a beautiful summer day as in the examples in the photos.More examples if you click on my page, my website or @emidphoto

It's definitely worth a visit. The Gardens are stunning, party wild and great fun for kids to venture through. The facilities are very clean and the staff super friendly. We took a tour years ago but I have only positive memories. Very detailed and lots of history. I feel almost connected to this place as you can feel the historic spirit when wandering through. The little shop offers loads of spiritual and nature books, toys and merchandise of course. All very reasonable priced. It has a playground but obviously haven't been there. Last time was 12 years ago and very nature based. My boy had great fun back then.

We spent an enchanting evening and day at Huntington Castle! We were greeted by sheep in the meadow and peacocks freely roaming in the courtyard. Our visit began with a fascinating tour of the original castle which has remained in the family since it was first built (1625, I believe). Our guide, Peter, shared anecdotes and history for a thoroughly enjoyable tour. The sculptural garden was breathtaking. We took both an evening and morning walk through the garden and wooded area with incredible flowers in bloom. We had an apartment in the Esmonde wing (three bedrooms, two bath, kitchen and living room) and it was absolutely perfect. Views overlooking the Abbey on one side and courtyard and sheep on the other. This was our favorite stay of our two week trip in Ireland! Such a unique and beautiful experience. The breakfast in the morning was delicious too.Looking forward to returning again one day! Highly recommend!

The gardens are beautiful, visit on a sunny day and you'll want to stay forever. The tearoom is lovely, the gift shop is great - not your generic castle gift shop at all, lots of really cool bits in there. And the castle tour is good fun and very interesting.

Sarah B — Google review

Really nice walk in the gardens. We didn’t have the greatest weather but it still was real nice. We have not visited the inside of the castle as we arrived around 10am and the first tour was only at 1pm.

Charlotte B — Google review

It's a rather small castle but has a nice courtyard with a café. Lovely peacocks wandering around the courtyard that added to our experience. The tour guide was wonderful. And the grounds were beautiful to walk around in. The only thing that's missing is ready to go sandwiches. I didn't want to eat sugary foods, but there was no savoury option available. Otherwise, it was a lovely experience and worth seeing.

Dunmore Cave, located in Kilkenny, Ireland, is a unique and historically significant site. It was the scene of a Viking massacre in 928 AD and has been described as one of the darkest places in Ireland since the 9th century. The cave features striking calcite formations and offers an intriguing tour experience. The tour includes a visit to a mini-museum showcasing an animation about the cave's history and formation process.

An amazing OPW heritage site to visit with family. The guides were knowledgeable and staff was very friendly. The gentleman at reception came to the parking lot to inform us about the guided tour which was starting in few minutes. Really saved us nearly an hour. The caves were fascinating and had a lot of history behind them.

Kopal G — Google review

we had a brilliant guide who's also a trained archeologist showing us through the cave and it's only €5 for the admission. extremely interesting tour, lots of history and he looked after each visitor and made sure we got in and out safely. it gets very cold and wet, so make sure you bring a jacket and proper footwear.

Charlie C — Google review

Super informative tour with the amazing Jean...loved the history here...well worth it.

Harold C — Google review

The caves were amazing. Well lit enough to be safe without ruining the cave experience. Guide was super knowledgeable and made the history of the cave fun. Fairly easy walk with good footing, but a lot of steps.

Kevin R — Google review

Extremely unique experience. The tour guide is super professional and friendly. 1 min pure dark silence experience is absolutely a plus. Love every part of it. 5 euro entrance fee worth every penny.

Raymond Z — Google review

Very interesting tour. The guide (Helen) has great sense of humor keeping us all entertained. The cave is cold all year round (9 degrees) so make sure you wrap up warm!

Patryk P — Google review

An interesting place to visit! There is a mini-museum that shows a mini animation about the history of the cave and the process of its formation. But there is no information anywhere about the availability of lunch break on Sunday. I had to wait for more than 40 minutes, I was determined to wait and see the cave planned in my itinerary for the weekend. After the opening, the group took about another 30 minutes to get in.

Iryna S — Google review

I loved getting to know about Dunmore Cave! John was our guide and he is a legend. Really informative, energetic and passionate about the history he was telling us.The entrance is cash only, and bear in mind there is no nearby ATM. As far as I noticed, it is not possible to book tickets online.I would not recommend bringing kids along - it is dark, damp, I don’t think kids are into geology and stalagmites, and they keep wondering around where they shouldn’t; it gets cold inside the cave so a spare jacket is always welcomed, and please stay off the rocks 😊

Gabriela S — Google review

👌Highly recommend place to be visited in Ireland.🦯Guided tour can be available for €5 per person.ℹ️Very detailed explanation about the history of the cave and currant developments.🅿️Plenty of parking spaces available.🌮Recommended to get some food before the visit from nearby city which is Kilkenny as you might be tired after the walk inside cave.🎥 Videography is not permitted inside the cave.

Jithu S — Google review

Fascinating tour of the cave system with a wonderfully helpful and informative guide named Jean. The caves are really interesting and there are some amazing features. The history and legends connected to the cave are intriguing. Definitely a place to visit when in Kilkenny.

Claire M — Google review

Thanks to OPW for allowing visitors to this site and maintaining it well. This place allows one to see millions of years of nature's work. While the caves themselves are great, it is the OPW guides who make it awesome. A video explaining the formation of caves is played at the start, and then we are taken in groups by a guide to show us around. They say 700 steps, but steps are pretty small and most people will be able to do them with ease. We saw plenty of children happily climb up and down. A must visit hidden gem.

Amazing caves for such a low price. 5 euro tickets can't get cheaper than that. Really close to Kilkenny town which is well worth the visit too. Tour is informative but if you prefer non guided visits. This is not the place for u. 700 steps supposedly so be ready for a bit of exercise. Well worth the visit

Wow... awesome!! Well worth the visit. The tour I would highly recommend as it tells you all about not only the cave, but about the Vikings. Most believe it was a Viking massacre, but historians believe the Vikings were buried in the cave. So moreso a cemetery than a massacre... believe what you will of course. But the fact that the Vikings in the cave date back to 900 AD and before?? Unbelievable!! 5 stars for sure.

J C — Google review

Excellent experience, highly recommend the guided tour, very enjoyable and a real glimpse into the past. Brilliant to experience the total darkness of the cave!Brilliant for all ages.Loads of ParkingTour last approx 1 hour 30 minsVery affordable prices too

Awesome place and piece of history along side, definitely worth visiting

Fnap — Google review

Wonderful experience!!- First of all a well educated tour guide who knows everything about this cave and it’s history. She explains them in such a way that even kids are eager to listen.- One of the darkest place experienced in Ireland- They even have fossils stored and explained what are them and when was it found.- This Gem is very budget friendly (€5 for adults and I think €3 for students and children)

Athul K — Google review

Amazing experience. Great introduction video to explain the history before an escorted tour of the three main areas of the cave (40mins). Truly fascinating stuff and highly recommend.

Recently reopened to the public and well worth (another) visit. Very informative and relaxed tour. Everything I visit here Iearn something new. Small cavewith 3 main chambers, but full of character and stories.

Kevin D — Google review

A very interesting place to visit, with very old history. Our guide was very prompt and shared quite a few anecdotes about the cave. Highlight of the tour was when the lights in the cave were switched off to really help understand how dark and quiet the cave actually is.

N K — Google review

Today was my first time back at the Cave in about ten years, Nice little visitor centre with very welcoming Guides. They have a very interesting informational video pre tour. The tour itself took about 40 minutes our Guide Jean was excellent, good sense of humour lovely manner and a mine of information.Well worth a visit if your in the area.

John was lovely! We had a good time enjoying the caves. He was patient with me as I climbed out! It's so many stairs and I have bad knees and asthma. He didn't rush me at all!

Heather P — Google review

Really loved this tour. So interesting. Our tour guide was Mark - very nice, and knew so many facts and stories. Could listen to him all day.Inside the cave was so cool. A little cold and wet. But fine. Not suitable for smaller kids. But my 12 year old loved it. It was only 13e for our family of 3 which I thought was very affordable. The actual tour was around 30 mins. The only thing was, there was so many steps. Definitely got my exercise today. I would highly recommend this as it's something different to do.

Bewildering…and not in a good way. Not open on Monday and Tuesday, only from Wednesday to Sunday. However, if it’s a bank holiday Monday, then it IS open but then it ISN’T open that following Wednesday 🙄🤪🤦🏻‍♂️??? It’s the most diddlee-eye Ballybackwards arrangement I’ve ever encountered (and that’s saying something!)Furthermore, when you arrive at the reception area you will be met by a sign that says the card machine is broken and it’s cash only, followed by directions to an ATM a few kms away! What??? 😳😳 Also, please be aware you are unable to book tickets online in advance. Well, it is only the 21st century after all? Ballybackwards strikes again!I’ve visited these caves a number of times over a couple of decades, sometimes with kids and sometimes with adults. Every time there it was enjoyable. Until my latest one that is. Hardly any illumination within the cave, overheard other patrons querying with each other as to when the rest of the lights were going to be switched on? It was incredible! I could hardly make out anything. My daughter switched on her phone torch, as did I, to help illuminate our paths. My daughter was glared at by the frosty tour guide. I then used my flash to see if my photo would come out better and was told off by the guide, in front of everyone. Real attitude on him. We returned to reception, received a refund and left. As I stated at the start…bewildering!! Caves are stunning (I know from previous visits) and well worth seeing, but the utter lack of proper illumination and the testy tour guide means that honestly, I couldn’t recommend this location on this basis.

Altamont Gardens, situated on the banks of River Slaney in Ireland, is a stunning 16-hectare landscape consisting of manicured lawns and woods. It also boasts an arboretum that houses a variety of oaks and rhododendrons. The gardens are home to an assortment of wildlife such as peacocks, swans, squirrels and wild hare that roam around the area surrounding the ornamental water-lily lake.

Really enjoy Altamont gardens. Lovely place to visit especially in February and early March when all the snowdrops are out. Really nice grounds to walk around. Enjoyed a nice coffee and cake in the cafe. Thought the garden nursery was expensive for plants.

Connor gave us the best, free tour to fit our one hour visit schedule before we had to move on. The history of the house, the owner, and garden were captivating. I wish them the best to get funding to get the house restored so we can visit the inside the next time we visit. Only 2 euros for parking slip and everything else is free. I believe the free walking tours are given on top of the hour. Highly recommend.

Anthony C — Google review

Wow. Where to start. It is at times beautifully manicured and at times frighteningly wild. Such variety, great coffee and cake, a fantastic walk. Toilets and a garden centre too. A top place.

Beautiful garden in Carlow. fabulous display and variety of plants, trees ,flowers. A lovely forest walk down to the river Slaney. A garden center and coffee shop. You could spend the day there easily, fun for all ages. Paid parking but plenty of it and lots of picnic benches. Plenty of seating for those with mobility issues and toilet facilities.

Tracey B — Google review

Oh so many beautiful gardens on our island. OPW acquired this from Corona, who achieved wonders in feminising the traditional stark Georgian garden. Her father before her took a great interest in rhododendron seedlings (from which Corona was given her name). The trees, plants, fields, lake and follies are wonderful. Take a tour if you get a chance, Lina was our guide, and she excelled herself. Thanks all.

If you are visiting be sure to take the free guided tour. We did it with Line who really knows so much about the gardens, their history and the last owner Corona Watson who did so much to make the gardens the amazing place they are to visit. Parking is €2, there are picnic tables, a cafe on site and also plant sales. A great day out.

Ciaran G — Google review

Lovely walk. We got drawn into the garden centre first. Make sure to see the apple trees down the back because they are awesome and quite a lot of effort must have gone into growing them that way. Then we got lost in the oasis that is the walk from mature garden to woodland walk it was a lovely way to spend a few hours with the family

Cathy D — Google review

Lovely garden, with both sunny and shaded area. The main garden with walk around the pond is mostly accessible for the pram / wheelchair and has some benches / chairs for resting. That walk takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. The woodland walk was closed when I was there due to ground conditions caused by the recent wet weather. The cafe outside is very nice, providing cakes / desserts, coffee, tea, soup with brown soda bread, and commercial sandwiches (from the fridge). Toilets are outside in the parking area. Dogs are not allowed in the garden. Parking is 2 euro for the day.

Panpan L — Google review

Fabulous gardens and walk. Lots of plants for sale and a lovely little cafe too.Very beautiful and relaxing.

Beautiful walk yesterday with two of our grandchildren took the woods way this time. Wonderful place. Plenty of parking for just 2.00. Toilets open but not cafe at this time of year. Visited again with 2 grandchildren. Beautiful place and walks. Lovely time of year to visit. Stopped for refreshments before we went home kids had hot chocolate and gingerbread men. Adults had two lovely cups of soup and brown soda bread. Delicious 😋

Lovely gardens, with wood and river walks. Manicured expansive lawns surrounded by various deciduous and evergreen trees. Large ornamental pond.

We got the most amazing free guided tour of Altamont gardens with a history of the house from Dan O’Connor. Simply brilliant. He made our day. Well done to the OPW on the maintenance of the place. Also, wonderful garden centre to buy plants. Just €2 to park your car. No entrance fee. Magical day in the sunshine last Saturday.

Mairéad M — Google review

Great spot to visit. Car parking costs €2 and is patrolled by a warden. The main house itself is not open to the public and is probably in need of repairs...but Altamont is all about the gardens!!! To the right of the house is the cafe and shop, which is located inside the walled garden. The cafe serves pre-made sambos, cakes, coffee and tea. The tables are all surrounded by plants, it's a really nice space to enjoy your grub. The shop is also located here and sells plants and flowers. There are quite a few picnic tables scattered about if you want to bring your own food. You access the main gardens via a gate to the right of the house. There is a small OPW office at the gate, and there are free guided tours run every hour. The gardens are seriously impressive. Very well kept and maintained. The first part are more formal, leading to a lake with ducks. From here there is a river walk I would highly recommend that is circular and brings you back to the lake past a small stone structure called the temple. Note this trail has some rough ground so probably not suitable for buggies or small kids.Put Altamont gardens on your list and also pop in to see Rathgill hillfort which is just down the road!

Justin M — Google review

Every season brings new discoveries as you stroll along the paths surrounded by trees, flowers and a flowing river

Marie A — Google review

Most of paths were closed due to "greasy conditions ". Drove 2hrs to get there just for a short walk. Hopefully next time all paths will be opened. Will ring ahead. Toilets just a tad better than toi toi. Nice cafe and lovely gardens. Just pity we didn't get to explore it all. You can also buy plants for your garden here. Ni charge for entrance. Nice old house but falling into disrepair, no tours there.

Rathwood is a versatile destination offering furniture, garden items, a kids' play center, and a full-service restaurant. It is located in an area with other popular attractions such as the Arboretum Christmas Village and The Santa Train Experience. Customers have praised the excellent service and timely delivery of products like the Pandora pergola. Visitors have enjoyed delightful experiences at Rathwood's restaurant for both breakfast and afternoon tea, praising the professional staff and delicious food.

The special occasion events they put on are fantastic. The staff are extremely professional but very friendly 😁 I will definitely return

Went here with my children for the teddy bears picnic, watched a little show and at the end made a teddy bear each that they got to keep, we all had a great time, there is a little fun fair and play centre which my children really enjoyed, had some lunch 'soup and sandwiches' which was very tasty

Elaine C — Google review

Drove here to get dinner and a look around the garden centre.Last time I was here there was a carvery. Now you are seated and the waitress takes your order. We ordered:Chicken nuggets and chips.Caesar salad.Beef lasagna. The chicken nuggets were made of real chicken and tasted good. The Caesar salad had plenty of chicken and ham but was a little creamy. The beef lasagna was just ok.The big letdown for me was the chips. They came from a frozen bag and weren't very nice. For the price and the high standards of Rathwood there should be homemade chips with the dishes. It's just a lazy way of having chips on the menu.

Gerard F — Google review

Images of 'brand new' rattan basket I ordered. Took off tag to try and dust it. It did not improve it much, but was told nothing they can do. 60 euros worth of dirt and dust. How can this even be sent to a paying customer? Shameless. Would not recommend.

We had an issue with our delivery initially but once the team took hold of the situation, we had a great experience.Kuba who delivered our furniture was an absolute pleasure to deal with.Would highly recommend the Barcelona range of garden furniture :)

My mum and myself were left very disappointed with our recent visit to Rathwood, especially the restaurant. We've been coming to Rathwood from when it opened over 20 years ago.Upon entering the restaurant, we were left waiting at the door for roughly 10 minutes. We were then shown to a table and told that some menus would be brought over to us. Nothing. I got up and got them myself. Another long wait. The menu was limited, mediocre and frankly, disappointing. The food, the same. I don't know why they have changed their service.Rathwood appears to be now aimed at children with plenty of play areas and fun rides which has taken over a previous area with home and garden items. Not what it used to be.

Jill — Google review

Delighted with our Pandora pergola which we got a few weeks ago. Excellent service from Rathwood and Listowel Garden Centre. Delivery on the day and time they said, it is worth paying for the more expensive delivery option as it makes the whole process easier. Pergola arrived less than a week after buying. Easy to assemble, though it is essential to have at least two and ideally four people to help out. It is doing a very good job of shade from the sun and shelter from showers. Have opened the slates when there was a deluge just to be on the safe side as has a bad experience before with a gazebo. Overall very happy and would recommend both Rathwood and Listowel Garden Centre.

Excellent from start to finish. Lovely staff, great coffee shop, kids loved the funfair, Santa train through the woods in the evening was magical. Show was brilliant, great presents and lovely Santa at the end with a real beard. Can't say a bad thing about it. Will definitely be back next year.

A gem in Tullow, Co. Carlow, well worth the drive, it's about one hour drive from Dublin. It is child friendly with lovely staff.

Fiona G — Google review

Nice place to wonder around. Lovely ladies shops, my elderly mam got some lovely clothes. Nice garden centre too, the lunch was a bit disappointing, the gluten free food options weren't great, I had soup and bread as there wasn't a lot of hot food options, chips were not cooked separately but it's understandable to be honest as they cater for large crowds and food has to be pre made. Other than that, I'd go again, thanks.

Alan M — Google review

Wrong items delivered, no responsibility held to swap them and handle their own issue, zero quality control - overall terrible experienceWe ordered and fully paid for a garden set for 1800 euros (!!!) way in advance of summer to save money. We intended to get it for a big family event and invited a lot of people in advance, even abroad. They delivered a broken chair (one of the legs is bent too much, it's just unsafe to use!) and WRONG table base/top for the set, so its just impossible to assemble it to use properly! I called the same day to report it but they said they can't do anything - no substitutions until late September (which is almost 3 months later, when summer is over!). Thats a terrible customer experience and zero empathy, no wish to go forward - i was okay with a used(!) substitute from a showroom as i really needed that furniture set for the event i mentioned. To prove that its a legit complaint - order SO84873-35, customer request 125843

We went out with the kids in the car with the intention of buying wood, but found they had a lovely restaurant and loads of indoor and outdoor stuff for the kids. Loads of other shopping areas too. Very helpful staff made my choice easy. A pallet of good value hardwood delivered within a week. Will go again.

William B — Google review

Arrived on time, and driver was helpful. Chairs are very solid and of good quality as is the table once assembled, which is not hard to do. The reason for the 3 stars. The cushioning does not match the quality of the rest of the set. Its very thin my wife who is 9 stone can feel the ridges of the rattan quite soon after sitting. We like the set but are now going to have some seat cushions made for comfort.

Christopher M — Google review

This place was amazing. It has so many facilities and you can easily spend the entire day with your family. We started The Day from the restaurant and then we went for a short walk, then we joined the train ride inside the park, feeding the deer and ducks... Then finally kids spend the time inside the indoor playground. What a brilliant business idea.

Great place to visit during winter as Santa's train starts moving around and you get to meet Santa and his elvesDefinitely a place to take your little ones for an eventful day

David G — Google review

We purchased a garden set for four. Very pleased with the quality and price (63% discount). There was some problem with delivery (2 weeks) because the manufacturer delayed production and delivery times. The company seller informed us about this in a timely and polite manner. The quality is excellent, strong. I hope this set will serve us for a long time.

Alina — Google review

Diana was very helpful, providing me with updates in a timely manner. Most importantly, she was able to resolve a complex issue for me.As for the furniture itself, we haven’t fully assembled it yet, but so far so good. Bit surprised to see Wicker Direct tag at the back of the chairs rather than RW, but I can live with it😁

Kasia B — Google review

Very good communication, otherwise won't buy again. These pics were taken the day I unboxed the items, yes weeks after I received the table and chairs. They were stored out of the elements and bone dry no marks on the table box. The damage could only have happened before boxing. The cover opened the day I got it.

David G — Google review

"Poor Quality & Overpriced - Save your money and avoid the frustration."We purchased a 6-seater garden set from Rathwood in Apr/May 2023. It was stored properly: cushions in the garage, umbrella in the shed, and the furniture covered with the cover we also bought, placed in a shaded area of the garden. In 2024, upon taking everything out of storage, we discovered the cushions were moldy (despite nothing else in the garage being affected) and the furniture cover was torn. When we approached the staff for help, they claimed they could "do nothing" and replacements were not available. We had to continue using the furniture with different cushions.Shortly after, the umbrella folded in half, and to top it off, the glass top exploded overnight. Rathwood again offered no replacement or assistance.I would not recommend Rathwood garden furniture. It didn’t last even one full season of light use, and their customer service was friendly but completely unhelpful.Save your money and avoid the frustration.*****Update*****The Customer Service Supervisor continues to blame us for causing all damages stating that the furniture failures are caused by misuse of the product. The table top has further deteriorated without the glass cover (new image added).

Gareth Y — Google review

We had a really bad experience here, the place was filthy dirty. Tables and chairs with food, sauce footmarks all over them. No one cleaning around or even staff to come and help clean. I paid €65 for an Eddie Rocektts as the restaurant had closed. It was disgusting. €7:50 for 2 chicken nuggets and chips this is the child’s portion size. €11:50 for my burger which was slop. When I complained they just shrugged all pre-made I was as told. Complain to the owner, Thomas Farrell catering company. This is the standard Rathwood is letting on their premises it won’t last much longer. The Santa train was a joke no interaction with the elves. Put in a room to wait on the train, down through the woods, rushed into the big top. The show was good. A then a huge queue in the freezing cold to see Santa. We won’t be back again I’d much rather spend my money on the discovery park or wells house. At least I know it will be clean.

My experience purchasing outdoor furniture with Rathwood was hassle free and their customer service was friendly and very helpful. I could not fault anything. Rathwood is go to place for any seasonal activity! Kids absolutely love the shows that they put on. Restaurant is great although we preferred the carvery that they used to have, but the food is still good!

Rob J — Google review

Poor quality product and when I contacted Rathwood they told me that this model (Barcelona range) was made from stainless steel which does rust there they were unable to help even though they tell you it is painted in a protect powdercoating.I bought from them thinking I wld get a good quality product but as pics show, it is not fit for purpose! I used a protective cover over the winter aswell which clearly didn't help.Wld also highlight that their supposed 'sale' like a few other stores never seems to end so don't be fooled into believing you are getting a good deal!Very disappointed as the furniture looks so nice when purchased and wld have added the table set to complete the look if didn't have this experience.Steer clear of RW - poor quality & customer service!

The Chocolate Garden of Ireland is a wonderful place to visit on Easter Sunday. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and there's plenty of delicious chocolate for everyone to enjoy. The children can make their own chocolate eggs, sample some delicious ice cream, and meet the Easter Bunny. It's a thoroughly fun experience that everyone will love!

We four oldies had the most wonderful experience at The Chocolate Garden yesterday. Mary went to endless trouble to cater for our needs and ensure we had endless plates of truly delicious food, and surprises of sweet strawberries for dipping in The Chocolate Garden's own wonderful melted chocolate. We thoroughly enjoyed our chocolate making experience too and are looking forward to eating our creations very soon. Thank you, Mary, and Michelle for excellent table service.

We will definitely return - for the rum & raisin ice cream alone!! My mother and I visited on Saturday with my 3 children and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. When we returned home, unfortunately we discovered my mother had left her wallet behind! The help and assistance we got with getting it returned safely to her; from start to finish; was just brilliant. The owner Jim Healy made sure it was looked after properly and Laura and Anita were very helpful in their interactions with us on the phone. They couldn't have been more helpful. My mother was so relieved and we were very grateful for all their kindness. If our brief interaction with them is any indication as to how they run their business, you can well understand how and why they are so successful. Can't wait to visit again and try some of your wonderful award-winning products!

Their icecream is the nicest, creaminess I've had and well worth a try (whisky, bailey's, plain vanilla and salted caramel have been the winners in our family). Our son loves going there for their kitchen in the playground. Perfect place to relax on a weekend with or without kids.

Have been to the chocolate gardens a few times now & every single time we have been welcomed by the lovely staff and very nice owner, They have the nicest chocolates, coffee & home-made Ice cream they also have products for people with dairy free requirements. 10/10 highly recommend this place it also has a lovely playground for children which is secured by gates. We will definitely be back 😊👍🏽

My kids loved this place. I found this place on google and emailed it on the day to see if you had to book or could walk in as we were only in carlow for a couple of nights. They were very prompt with getting back to me letting me know if we could walk in for the workshop. Which we could which was great. So we poped on over..price was very reasonable €12.50 each to make your mould, and also get a free icecream after which was a bonus. We had a coffee while we were waiting for the chocolate moulds to set. Nice area to sit and relax, and nice playground for the kids. We also bought a few chocolate products which were also very good prices. Staff were very nice and helpful which makes all the different. Defo recommend this place. Hidden gem.☆☆☆☆☆

Such a hidden gem! The girls working there are incredible: so kind and so friendly. We had Sarah as our host/server the day we did the chocolate molding and she was so lovely. The chocolate molding workshop is well worth it, I really think they're undercharging for it as you get to keep your mold, your chocolate creation (which is a hefty slab of chocolate), a free waffle cone, and that covers all your time in the venue (playground etc.) all for €12.50. It's a superb place to visit with kids.

Kate G — Google review

What a lovely place to visit. Great value for money, friendly staff and a great choice of products. My girls enjoyed doing their own chocolate design, and the ice-cream while they waited for the chocolate to set was a perfect end to the visit. Thank you.

I bought a 2foot chocolate Santa as a raffle prize to support North London Hospice. We raised £700. The service was fantastic and the staff were amazingly helpful. Thank you

Deirdre — Google review

We were told how the chocolate is made most of it is obtained from Africa. We're even able to make our own chocolate mold! however you weren't able to pick if you want a dark chocolate, chocolate or white. So for $40 a person I thought it a bit expensive.

Midge B — Google review

I brought my kids here for something different to do over Christmas. They loved making there own chocolate moulds which looked fantastic and tasted lovely. The ice cream was also really delicious. My kids had a great time playing in playground outside, the staff were really friendly and the selection of chocolate gift were really creative. We enjoyed our day out here and will be back in the near future.

Clodagh U — Google review

For a place founded on chocolate, the mocca coffee was fairly bland and not very chocolatey. There is a great array of chocolate products available and well displayed. Nice outside seating with playground facilities for children.

80-acre activity park with walking trails, kids' play areas, fishing lakes and a canopy walkway.

Spent a lovely few hours here. Kids really enjoyed the trampolines and kids obstacle course. Plenty of activities for teens and adults aswell. Or just come and relax. Pay 5e for all day parking and enjoy a long walk through the woods and around the lakes and bring a picnic. Fabulous day. We will be back.

An impressive outdoor activity destination with something for all age groups/levels. Immersed in Castlecomer’s stunning natural woodlands, this place is well worth a visit.

Brilliant experience. It was our first time and we were not disappointed.Very easy to access and park. We came early and did archery and skywalk challenge. The staff is so friendly and helpful. A big big big thank you to Maya in the skywalk for her patience with our son who got terrified of heights. We will be coming back to do more.Good point: you can bring your dog and a picnic.

Lovely walk yesterday on purple trail. Park is well worth a visit, walks, family activities, well signposted, good restaurant and lots of small shop units. Linked to busy town centre with a new bridge.

What a great day we had we hired a Canadian canoe for 16 euro for half an hour doesn't sound long but believe me it was enough than after that done archery again 16 euro for half an hour . .there was 3 of us and we nearly had 3 go's eachDefinitely recommend it ..Amazing walks and loads to do

What an absolutely brilliant day out for the entire family- high points were the zip line, tree-top walk and canoes. Bring a picnic for elevenses, great cafe on site and lovely ice-cream parlour too. We have had two brilliant days there recently. Great activity/ outdoors day out. Hidden gem 💎

Deirdre N — Google review

We went treetop walking, about 30 odd feet up, scary enough up there finding your way through the course, good fun, and if you're scared of heights, just put on an act for your kids or partner, and you'll feel great at the end of it, I promise! 👍👍👍

RD 1 — Google review

Activities are very expensive per child. You need to book some things at cafe and other things are paid for at the particular point of entry however it's not clear when you are starting out. More signage placed around and info leaflet at initial entry would be great. Also cheaper prices would be more appropriate, we attend a similar place in France and the cost was 75% cheaper much better value.

Lynda F — Google review

We didn't complete the tree walk or the zipline but we were able to get on the peddle boats on the lake and also really enjoyed looking at the mining exhibition in the main centre.

Nicola K — Google review

The park and staff were fantastic. Great experience. I would give it five stars, however ,I believe if you spend over €75 you should not be charged for parking on top of that and should have your parking validated at reception.

Matt G — Google review

Extremely tough review to write. On the one hand, the variety of activities on offer and the age groups catered for is to be commended. However, on the other hand, as a parent bringing children or teenagers here, you’re going to have to have deep pockets. Despite the park itself being open ‘freely’ to the public for walking, jogging, cycling etc., nothing here is really free. For example, if you drive to this location you’ll need to park. Parking is not free. The activities side of the Park are varied as stated above and depending on those chosen, your visit could run quite expensive. I brought two teenagers here for the Octagon and Zip-line combo, which is discounted if combined. €18.50 for each activity or €31 if combined. €93 for three. Didn’t matter that one teenager was 15; €31. I shudder to think what other parents are paying for a family here. On our way back after completing the zip line we passed lots of other activities along the way (axe throwing, archery, boating) and passed by a lot of the kids activities. We overheard a dad telling his 4 or 5 year old girl that if she wanted to go on the activity it was not free. She obviously couldn’t comprehend this as I suppose she just saw bouncy stuff, ropes, climbing stuff and a lot of other stuff kids see in kids play areas. I really felt for him in that situation. She just wanted to participate. Park is too expensive, really. It is possible to buy online tickets but once there you might find that you or your family members are tempted by other activities once they see them (perhaps this is what was playing out with the girl and her dad?)As regards the Octagon, the safety briefing was thorough; they really impress upon you the safety aspects. The activity itself is hard work physically and it gets old fast, in my opinion. My teenagers got more mileage from it but after an hour they were done. Conveniently, the zip-line launch platform is immediately adjacent to the Octagon. The zip-line is a fabulous thrill and well-worth doing once if you’ve not done it before. As thrilling as it is, it is far too expensive. €18.50 on its own. A family of four costs nearly €80 for a 30 second zip-line. This place is a public park, in which this “not for profit” entity exists. But quite quickly I found that once here and once kids see what’s on offer it can quickly turn into a theme park experience and if you give into your kids then you better have deep pockets.Once finished, when you’re all tuckered out and you’re still recovering from open-wallet surgery, you and your rug rats will require feeding! Best of luck with that! There’s a sandwich bar/cafe run by teenagers or an Asian restaurant to choose from. In hindsight, perhaps arranging a bank loan before coming here might be an idea?!And as you’re packing up your car to go home don’t forget you still have to pay for parking! 🅿️

Mike L — Google review

Beautiful place for a stroll and free Parking if you spend less than an hour

Leah — Google review

Park is beautiful and staff were very helpful and there’s lots to do whether it’s paid activities or just a stroll around the area. One tip - display prices of activities. We saw no prices for activities and some are on the expensive side - a heads up for families before the go to pay, as to how much the activities are, would be helpful for most families these days.

Wonderful outdoor recreation center with lots of activities for all the family. We did the Skywalk Challenge & Climbing Wall, and while both were enjoyable, the Skywalk was much more fun and better value. I would highly recommend the Skywalk Challenge. We were going to try the Zipline, but ran out of time. Facilities are great, but be aware that there are no bathrooms by the Skywalk area, so be sure to go in the main building before you start the Skywalk.

This is a very well layouted adventure park, good for family fun day, kids activities, walks, dog are allowed and a bit of sport if you want to go just for a run.The only downside is the poor choice of food options. But you can potentially pack your bag.

Anella C — Google review

Great day spent doing the "scavenger hunt" aka their seasonal Once Upon a Wish Summet Trail, helping Filbert the frong. Note that if you choose this activity you will follow along with your little ones, answering riddles and questions throughout the park. We also did the combo with Junior Woodland Adventure Course which was perfect for our 4 and 6 y.o.s The Bouncy area was included. The Coffee in the area was surprisingly good and they had milk alternatives for my lactose intolerant self. All the staff was very nice and helpful. The high point for me was (aside from amazing nature and a fun trail) the delicious food from TukTuk satay sauce was delicious, Thai green chili and nasi goreng we yummy!

Brilliant morning with my almost 4 year old at Castlecomer Discovery Park. We booked the Junior play area combo and the staff at both areas were friendly and welcoming. We then had a picnic at the elf and fairy village and there were lots of woodland areas to explore. We finished in the playground which my daughter loved. I had a lovely coffee in the canopy cafe too. Highly recommend and lots of activities suitable for older children and teens too. Brilliant family park.

Just spent 3 nights here. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Great spot for families. Kids really enjoyed it especially the animal petting farm. They loved the play ground and tractor ride. Lots to keep them entertained. Also great entertainment for adults including bingo and music in the evenings. Nice selection of hot food in the shop at a reasonable price. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to our large group. Very relaxed and friendly campsite! Toilets and showers were ok. No toilet paper or soap available which was an inconvenience but other than that we had no complaints! Will definitely be back

After a long day walking in the rain there was nothing better than the warm welcome I received from the staff at Ranchos. I was well looked after from start to finish and they made every effort to keep me and my tent as dry as possible for my short (but unforgettable) stay. Whether you're coming as a solo traveller or with the family, I couldn't recommend this place highly enough!

John K — Google review

We stayed one night as we were passing through the area. Eoin was very welcoming, the site was well laid out, good lighting to the toilets( which are a bit rustic but kept clean and tidy). The animals were a huge hit with the kids and the play area.

So glad ranchos has reopened, had a great weekend. Eoin, oisin and the team have done a great job cleaning and rebuilding it, the new cafe is a great addition and the menu is perfect and delicious. Can't wait to see what else they add. Tractor ride is great not just for kids but and its free and that includes the muddy pool they drive into.

Kristina B — Google review

Lots of confusion here with the name etc. So it's still rancho reilly. Rustic is gone. It's a campsite only but has its own pet farm. The old main building is gone due to a fire. We have a new sole owner the amazing Eoin whom is the host with the most. A lot of investment has gone into updating the site and its very visible. Playground loads new stuff. New cafe that doubles as a common area. Toilets are maintained throughout the day. The free frog hunt and tractor rides are a great unique touch. Eoin travels the campsite over the weekend having fun with all the guests eg playing football, tennis even raced a bunch of us and yes he won. You can't help but want him and rr to succeed and excell. We thought we would just go this once but are already planning our return. Nearest shops are 3 mins drive away. One pic is of kt fight that was put up on a big screen in the camping area (not sure whom organised but thank you). Highly recommended to all families.

Cronan B — Google review

Fantastic place to go camping with young children! You have access to the petting farm with horses, pigs, deer, snakes, lizards, rabbits etc, horse rides, tractor rides, playground, cafe and indoors play zone all included in the price you pay to camp. In the evening there is a frog hunt, fire pits, it is a really good place to visit. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the water was not reliable for showers etc

Really great place, staff / Eoin were extremely helpful, friendly, chatty etc. Nothing was too much trouble. Atmosphere was relaxed, safe and just generally great all round. Everyone was so friendly, campers, staff. Everyone, it was like a community, it was perfect. More importantly, the kids absolutely loved it and have said it is their favourite place to go camping ever ( and we've been to a few ). All the staff, especially Eoin were just fantastic with all the kids, they really go out if their way to make sure the kids have fun and safely. All the kids, everyone loved Eoin and the staff. To be honest, words cannot describe or do Eoin and the team justice, just fantastic.Definitely will be back and would recommend.

Visited in April 2017 with our two kids 7 and 4. Very good value - €6 per child and €3 per adult. No time limit, spend as long as you like. Has lots of attractions all free - playground, petting zoo (bunnies, snakes, lizards), donkey and pony rides, go cart track, sandpits, farm animals to feed, indoor play center and café with hot food and lots of seating with reasonable food prices but also picnic areas if you want to bring your own.Staff were very friendly. When my daughter was upset after spilling a drink the owner spent over 10 mins joking with her to cheer her up and gave both kids a free lollipop. Lots of free parking too.Highly recommended.

The pub offers a friendly atmosphere and hosts traditional music sessions that attract visitors from near and far. The establishment features various rooms adorned with artifacts, creating a museum-like ambiance. Additionally, it boasts outdoor seating by the river and is conveniently situated on the main street close to amenities.

On our travels to Durrow sightseeing the Castle and church in the square, decided to walk to Bob's bar. Strolled in on a Monday night and not a sinner in the place. Had a pint of guinness and a few snacks and walked around the pub to see the different rooms, alot of different artifacts to view, it's a bar and a museum, they do have a few TV's dotted around, nice outdoor area beside the river and located on the main street close to all amenities. My second time to visit this bar, first was in 2018 serving food for a wedding. A nice pub in a quiet town, will return.

EXPENSIVE! I ordered the Risotto (didn’t add any extras it’s overpriced as it is!) worst Risotto I’ve ever had - hard and undercooked - I ate it slowly in case I’d find one or two fully inedible but it wasn’t enjoyable at all. Filtered water is charged €1 per person (a first for me in any restaurant) would I try it again? Unfortunately no - if you get Risotto wrong it’s a big turn off for me, I thought as a Chef food should be tasted? Maybe pass this on as an undercooked Risotto is probably as basic as you can get - yes it takes time but serving it when it’s not ready is very disappointing.

Beautiful restaurant with a rustic theme. Food was delicious 😋. We had a shared platter and antipasti for starters. Mains were amazing too. It was late when we went and rainy so couldn't appreciate the outdoor space which I believe is lovely. Entrance and carpark could benefit from more lighting.

My 2nd time visiting this wonderful place. First time was for breakfast, mid summer, after we walked around the grounds, making friends with 2 donkeys and thoroughly enjoying being in nature in the gardens. Today, on a rainy Sat, we visited for a late Lunch. Food both times was both beautiful and delicious. I really do love this place. Touch of class! ⭐⭐⭐

Lisa D — Google review

The staff in the coffee shop are desperately cold. I've heard other people say it and it was true of both of my visits there. It's the small things like staff looking down at other things on your desk/cash register while you stand in front of them waiting to be served with zero acknowledgement of your presence. It's hard to describe but both times i found the service and the welcome to be poor and I wouldn't return or recommend it

While traveling through Carlow we took a detour off the M9 to find a nice spot for lunch. The Green Barn was not far off the road and we were served exquisite food and great service in a stylish barn conversion, all set in mature gardens with walks and sculptures and it looks like there is plenty more to discover in the grounds too. This was a magical and restorative day and we left feeling happy and healthier after feasting on the wholesome homegrown produce that was on offer. This is the kind of food that restores your faith in regional Irish cooking and hospitality.

I had an awful experience. I was with friends and my baby for lunch, it was fully booked as we did not have reservation. The guy at the front desk instead of being polite and saying they were fully booked he was super rude and disrespectful. He did not want us there and made everything for us to leave. For a lovely place like this, I don't how they have such a rude person at the front desk. Very unpleasant visit.

Just stayed one night in one of the stable rooms ,It was a gorgeous little spot , very comfy and clean bed , stunning location, peaceful, beautiful garden , birdsong .. all really lovely. But a few issues put me off this location. At €190 for one night , it was in the expensive side and for this you get zero cooking facilities. A microwave and toaster is it ( there is a kettle and a good coffee machine with coffee pods)No hob , nothing , as as you are quite isolated it wd be nice to have an ear in option .( on site restaurant only open at weekends , and accommodation is €45 more expensive those nights! Then the bathroom….. just not clean !Back wall of the shower is just painted, and it’s all chipped and gritty looking as are the floor tiles .The sink water was slow going down, so I lifted out the little stopper…. Was sorry I did … not been cleaned in an age ! Slimey and just ugh 🤢Why the polished concrete walls in the shower were not continued behind it I don’t know .Gardens were lovely to stroll around , but we were locked out of the veg garden !Having been in Ballymaloe cottages, their gardens are open to take a few salad and veg . Not so here , but mean .

To see the insect life in the garden was like going back in time. So many bees and butterflies. The food is excellent here also. All local produce. You can see most of next weeks menu growing outside as you eat.

As an experience chef i worked here for 2 weeks and absolutely disappointed, the owners have no respect for employees, she's acting like a chef and have no culinary experience at all, and he beside walking around and bothering the staff it seems he forget to get his "powder" from the bathroom after....... If you're experienced no matter what position, stay away of this place, it's just not worth it.

We have lunched here many times and while the menu is limited we have always enjoyed our experience.Today was very different - we booked for 2 people for 2.15 and although we arrived a little early we were shown to our seats with two menus.30 minutes later we decided to leave as we had not been offered drinks or our order taken. Three other tables beside ours number 15 were receiving the same attention.I noted this to the attendant and was advised that they were short staffed and no manager on duty.We made a booking online at 12.30 and travelled from Dublin for our nice lunch - shame. Please do not accept bookings if you do not have the staff cover to provide the expected service - it's bad for business.

William C — Google review

Poor service, orders were slow, clearing of tables very loose, delay in taking order was bizarrely explained by saying we were too early for lunch at 1230. Had to wait till 1300. Booked online thru website with no record of same when we landed. Seems like they are struggling for strong staff or an experienced maitre dit as the system was all over the place.Prices steep and just feels very loose as an operation. I never mind paying for solid offering, but this was all over the place unfortunately

Super spot guys, booked by my son as he's just moved to the area this week, but had been here previously and loved it, and I've got to agree with Dan, the hold experience was amazing, staff fab, food 👍 super, there was 6 of us and 100% we will be back but I've got to say that the lay out was amazing, you felt so comfortable and it felt like you were in a wonder land with the plants and the lightingNice one guys 👏👏👏

Burtown is a big country house, near Athy Co Kildare, built by a Quaker family in 1710. Always in the same family, the current generation have opened a restaurant, some accommodation , and host weddings. They are also carefully curating their natural meadows and have garden and farm walks, and a sculpture trail. There's a gallery with some crafts and lots of paintings and fine-art prints and there's a 'pantry' where you can just have coffee or buy nice edible bits and pieces. Now to business - we went to have Sunday lunch, a group of 5. There's a two/three course menu but also a regular menu, so be sure you are clear in advance which you want. Two of us had 2 courses, three had 1. With some tap water (not too palatable) and 5 very excellent coffees, it was 210 + tip - Ireland is expensive, no denying. But it was really lovely. Chicken caesar salad with delicious sourdough, plump yummy cod with mussels and fennell confit, meltingly tender beef. Sides of full-on spinach and pinenuts, and really excellent little chips with mayo. The waiting staff were cheerful and helpful. Other reviewers mention the pace of the service, which is, truth be told, on the leisurely side. But if you know this in advance and are enjoying your companions' conversation, it is perfect. Lig do scith. We advance-booked a tour of the house, led by the proprietor (at a fair clip) and it was joyous. Entertaining, eye popping, very generous in terms of the areas to which we were permitted access. If any film-location scout is on the hunt for a jumbly, labyrinth of a well loved, well lived in, Georgian-chic pile, look no further.

Visited here for breakfast and really enjoyed the food. The decor was beautiful and the service was good also. We were the only people dining when we were there. Dropped a star as owners/managers were based at a table nearby and were discussing issues with the chef along with how to negotiate prices with suppliers and how much ingredients cost. Felt slightly like I was part of their meeting rather than in a restaurant. There was 3 or 4 small dogs running about the place too which was off putting.I also dropped a star for the gardens which cost €10 extra and didn't merit the extra money. The gardens didn't have much of a focus and we found it hard to navigate. A few more signposts or a map would help. I wouldn't recommend paying to visit them.

Alan M — Google review

The owner of the establishment is profoundly incompetent. The room was beautifully decorated but has no space to leave a suitcase. The towels were frayed/ ripped and old, the room had trash left from previous customers and lots of dust, the shower has paint chipping away and the paths in the garden are not properly put together so you get very muddy. Most importantly I found that when we needed the owners assistance he was either taking 2-3 days to reply or lying in his responses to which I have never experienced before in Ireland. I will never return unless there is a change of management and the owner needs to educate himself in customer service. No one needs to have to deal with an arrogant liar to achieve the simplest of tasks, I honestly pity anyone deciding to get married there and having to deal with this man, please consider any other venue, absolutely NOT recommended

Z — Google review

Food was fabulous, wine was just as nice, however I'm only giving 1 star for the location, because as my first time there and in the darkness, it was very difficult to find. Definitely would benefit with some sort of lights upon entrance especially in the winter months.

Prawn pill pill is made well with good quality prawns. I would recommend the dessert (brioche perdu). I thought it would be like having brunch after dinner but it works as a very good dessert.

We were charged through booking.com but manager told us the payment didn't go through, so we were asked to pay through another card at higher price of 315eur a night. We've been double charged at a higher rate and we've been trying to get refunded for a month now. Manager assures us he's looking into it then ignores our texts. This is currently unresolved and I'm spending time contacting banks, booking, the manager, etc.Edit: finally got our money back after 3 months. Booking.com was able to assist however the Hotel management completely ignored us over this time and never responded and they assured us they would at the beginning. Very disappointing service. I would expect more from a hotel that is this expensive, I'll never stay there again.

Burton House has become a real favourite place for me to meet up with friends. The surroundings are wonderful, the food is sumptuous and fresh and the staff attentive. It’s one hour from where I live and is well worth the trip.

Ciara M — Google review

Run by great people. Love the decor and gardens. Beautiful place to stay for a few days.

Jon M — Google review

Good quality and delicious food. Beautiful, tranquil rustic decor of the restaurant. However, I can only award 3 stars because we waited 50 minutes for the food to arrive and the place wasn't even that busy. 2 out of 4 toilets were blocked. Tap water is charged €1 per person. Entrance to the garden cost €8 (€5 for customers of restaurant). That's a shame, as it is a pricey restaurant and being able to visit garden free of charge could score you extra points .

Agnieszka R — Google review

Just a three minute detour off the M9, this hidden gem is a perfect lunchtime stop off en route, or a 50 minute trip each way from Dublin for a Sunday spin. The food is diverse and very tasty, the staff are very friendly, and lunch was happily complemented by a half hour stroll through the snowdrop blizzarded gardens, complete with sculptures, a sundial, a prolific kitchen garden and a stream running through it. Very dog friendly. Highly recommended.

Rock of Dunamase is a 12th-century castle ruin located in a serene country setting, offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Managed by Tom & Marie Treacy, this family-run establishment is known for its quality food made from fresh local ingredients. The climb to the top provides panoramic vistas and ample space for exploration, making it suitable for visitors of all ages. The ruins hold historical significance as they were once home to Norman lord Strongbow and his wife Aoife.

Great hidden gem with a rich history. Free parking. Dog friendly. Excellent place to take photos of loved ones. Perfect picnic spot.

Natasha S — Google review

This is a little hidden gem. We loved walking around and getting a feel for what it would have looked like when it was in use. The views from the top are spectacular. I highly recommend taking your camera with you. There is no fee to enter. It is steep and as expected rocky in places. We managed in normal trainers so no need for special equipment or shoes though.

This was a perfect stop! You can really take in the scale see these ruins! It sits atop a hill that has panoramic views of the world below. I could have spent hours climbing around the rocks! This is a free stop!

Allyson G — Google review

Easy walk up to the ruin from the car park (but not for wheelchairs). Great views all around and an interesting, slightly 'Lord of the Rings' atmosphere with the ruin being on top of a hill. Recommended!

Super casual walk. Astonishing views. A must see. Worth visiting to take the stunning views and to take a moment to appreciate the rich history here.

Amazingly beautiful view of the area of this historic castle. A great place to bring kids. Be a little mindful of where you go, you could fall over the side if you are goofing around. There are no guides here.

A magnificent castle perched atop a hill, offering an amazing view of the county from its heights. The panoramic vistas alone make the visit worthwhile, providing a breathtaking glimpse of the surrounding landscape. The castle is situated in a picturesque location, though it's worth noting that parking spaces are quite limited. Planning ahead for this aspect of the visit is advisable.Despite the parking constraints, I felt privileged to explore this historic site, which is generously kept open to visitors. For anyone interested in history or simply looking to enjoy stunning views, this castle is a must-visit. It's a true gem that offers a unique glimpse into the past while showcasing the natural beauty of the county.

A great adventure to take a walk through a little piece of history. Spectacular views all around the ruins which sit atop a hill.

Juandr? S — Google review

Lovely spot for some exploring and visiting a piece of history. Also has a small church across and graveyard with some very old headstones. Be warned the walk up is very steep and some areas do not have railings - not wheelchair accessible due to steps at the entrance.

Had a wonderful quick visit to the Rock of Dunamase. The panoramic views were absolutely breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the surrounding countryside. A must-visit for anyone interested in history and natural beauty.

Dave J — Google review

It's a peaceful place with excellent views. It was not very crowded which makes it even more peaceful. The views from the top were breathing. You can see the whole county from above. The entrance is free.. If you are planning on visiting in Taxi, you might face issues on the return journey as most of the drivers might reject the trip due to the steep road that leads to the place. It's also a single road so your driving skills might be tested :)Overall a good place to visit if you are in Portlaoise.

Ghulam M — Google review

One of the largest old ruins scattered across Ireland with a stunning entrance. The grounds are large and well worth exploring, stunning views on a sunny day. All sorts of interesting areas, some lovely opening in the walls to get good photos and a fantastic location to visit, Great parking and a nice little church beside to enjoy too, cheers

The Rock of Dunamase is a place of wonder and enchantment, where the echoes of ancient legends seem to linger in the air. Climbing up the rugged paths to reach its summit, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation building with each step. As I stood atop the weathered ruins, overlooking the sweeping vistas of the Irish countryside, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer magnitude of history that surrounded me. It was a moment of pure awe, tinged with a profound appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit across the ages. Exploring the nooks and crannies of this ancient fortress with friends made the experience even more memorable, as we shared laughter and stories against the backdrop of centuries-old stone. The Rock of Dunamase isn't just a destination; it's a journey through time, leaving an indelible mark on the soul.

Claudia V — Google review

Amazing ruins of a former castle. Free to visit with parking at the bottom. Views of the surrounding countryside are worth it alone. We had no problems with the narrow road in our campervan but it’s probably not suitable for motorhomes or wide vehicle in general.

Chris F — Google review

Getting there was a bit tricky due to the Electric Picnic .. It must've been a magnificent castle. Now everything is under the ruins. I hope this was restored to a better state. No tickets and the car park was very small.

Very rural but extremely hands-on experience. If you like to get into the nitty-gritty & actually feel the 9th century. Throw in absolutely stunning views of the surrounding valleys & villages & you're in for a treat!

Great ruins to visit. Free, with some parking (not a car park, just some street parking). Went on a cold windy day, but still had a great time. The view is wonderful. We were the only ones there.

Jennifer L — Google review

I love popping up to the top of the Rock of Dunamaise when I go down to Laois. The views all around are stunning. On a clear day, you can see for miles. But even on a foggy morning, the atmosphere is evocative of medieval times, you can picture someone 800 years ago, working in the castle, feeling secure in its tremendous walls.

Una H — Google review

Nice, short walk up to the ruins, easy for anybody to do. Lovely views from the top.

Tim M — Google review

From the top of the rock, you'll be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. It's a perfect spot for capturing unforgettable photos or simply soaking up the fresh air and scenic beauty. The climb to the top is manageable for most ages, and there's plenty of space for kids to explore the ruins while learning about the castle's past. While it's a gravel path to the top, you'll only be able to take a stroller to a certain point; so do keep that in mind if you're bringing one!

Harsh S — Google review

Amazingly picturesque part of of Ireland and only 5 mins from M7. A nice stop off spot on route from Dublin to Cork

Jay M — Google review

Nice ruins integrated into the landscape. It's usually very windy at the top. It is worth going to see the sunset because sometimes it can surprise you with its beauty. the remains of the castle are raw and have been slowly decaying for 300 years. A nice place, luckily not yet commercialized

Adam G — Google review

Put these breathtaking castle ruins of the 12th century Norman lord Strongbow and his wife Aoife, the Irish princess on your list of detours off the M7. It sits precariously on a massive chunk of rock. The ruins are both evocative and enchanting. They’re high up on my list of Irish ruins because they speak to the heart as the Normans became more Irish than the Irish themselves. It’s a treasure of a find for any off the beaten track traveller.

Catherine N — Google review

Breathtaking views, amazing greenery, great walking paths, lovely fresh air....need I go on? Don't hesitate and get yourself down there. If you are a picture taking enthusiast then this place is for you. There are many amazing points for you to angle that camera and take shots from: Poulanass Waterfall, Nature Reserve points, Ancient Burial grounds, Wildlife (we saw a Fox and some Deer). The Glendalough Upper Lake was absolutely stunning and my favourite spot. This is a great place to take the family or even your loved one to. A day trip to explore history, take long walks and get some exercise all at the same time with some of those much loved 'selfie' moments. Why not bring your dog along too if you have one - plenty for them to do!There are tuck-shops for you to buy food from and I would recommend the chips as they were absolutely brilliant (especially on a cold day!). If you are a family with kids, you could bring your own picnic, and set-up in the various parts of greenery. Bring a Frisbee too for the kids/adults.*You can use Gas fire BBQ's if you are planning to do this here but not Coal fired BBQ's I imagine due to safety reasons. This is a good site for hikers as this is within Wicklow Mountains and we saw a lot of hikers preparing for camp.Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to know you can fish here amongst some of the lakes and rivers: most common fish found is the Brown Trout. It will get cold so do wrap up warm if the weather is anything below 10 degrees.Enjoy the panoramic views and beauty encompassing Wicklow Mountains.

Emo Court House, a grand 18th-century historical landmark designed by James Gandon, is situated in extensive landscaped grounds which contain over 1000 different trees and shrubs from all over the world. The house boasts an impressive green dome and also has a tearoom & gift shop for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can take guided tours of the house or opt for a scenic stroll through woodlands to Emo Lake.

This is such a fab place for a day outing to see the grounds or for a brisk walk. The paths are suitable for all fitness levels and are easy to navigate. Wear decent walking shoes because the grounds are quite extensive and you'll rack up quite a step count. It's dog-friendly too so long as they're kept on leash. However some areas are off limits for dogs like the restaurant and the Walled Garden. But everything else is fair game. Definitely will be back because we didn't even get to explore the whole place.

Lovely place to walk, jog, picnic or just relax and get that much needed nature therapy. Lots of greeneries, the lake side is so beautiful. My cat loved the place too!

Great spot for a day out with the family! Little over an hour from Dublin. There is parking in a small enough car park in front of the tea rooms which fills up fast, but they use a field as an overflow. They are in the middle of constructing a new car park at the moment. The main house is off to the right of the tea rooms however it's closed for repairs and renovations at the moment. There is a lovely walk around the lake that starts from the side of the main house, taking about 40 minutes and giving a lovely view of the lake and the gardens to the rear of the house. If you fancy a bite to eat there are tea rooms with indoor and outdoor seating serving tasty lunch options. There is a van serving coffee and cakes beside the tea rooms, with plenty of picnic tables for sitting.

Interesting history. Artifacts largely from other collections. Reasonably accesible for those with mobility issues . House tour is by guided group rather than self guided. No seats on way round the route which could be a problem for some.

Pete W — Google review

A gem location to visit for free gentle walks through parkland and it's associated meandering woodlands & beautiful lake. Has well presented formal garden areas to rear of the house including a quiet understated walled garden some distance away. Although the James Gandon neoclasdical designed mansion is under reconstruction by OPW & not open to the public at present, you can get a sense of it's history just being close up. Kudos to the reception staff at visitor's centre who filled me in on the history of the estate. I was always intrigued by the name "Emo" as not a typical Irish placename but was sure it had nothing to do with "Nemo" the fish or Emus! Turns out it is an Anglicised version from Irish "Ioma", meaning 'bed or resting-place' or locally interpreted as the "plain beside the woods".Was on our bucket list of Heritage sites to visit so stopped off on way back from Dublin (signposted from Exits 15 or 16). The tea room & garden seating is a must stop. I was amazed at the selection of food on offer. So if you want a quality place to have a light lunch & enjoy relaxing surroundings, Emo is the place to head. It's also a place apart from the hussle & bussle of Jn 14 off road service station facilities.https://heritageireland.ie/places-to-visit/emo-court-and-estate/

I'd give the view 10 out if 10. Fantastic view, but not ideal for people with mobility issue. I brought my parent to see the beautiful house have a coffee on the ground but the parkng lot is a good distance away from the house. My father is unable to walk long distance way further than he can walkfar... and you can't park close to the house unless you have the pass. Not ideal for elderly unless you have a mobility pass

Lovely place to go with kids and dogs. Big outdoor area for kids to run. There is a lake with ducks and swans.

Emo Park is a special place. The grounds are well maintained, and it is a joy to walk through the fields full of daisies, and the forest trails with an abundance of tree species. There are plenty of open spaces where you can sit down for a picnic on freshly cut grass, and admire the surroundings. The only downside is the CaToCa tea rooms. If you are served by Elizabeth, she will utterly erase all of the positive vibes you have of the place. Her poor customer service skills are destructive to what would otherwise be a pleasurable environment.

Diana — Google review

Lovely grounds for a walk and a cuppa after. Haven't done the tour of the house yet, but I've heard it's very good. Saw a heron this morning waiting for his breakfast to swim past.

Emma D — Google review

Fantastic place to visit, the house and gardens are well worth a visit! Very large area with very scenic views, one thing to note the house is closed at the moment due to renovations and upkeep but will open hopefully in the next few weeks. We decide to do a tour of the outside of the house and gardens, highly recommended so much history associated with the place, if you're in the area it's well worth a visit!

Lovely little destination, there’s a cafe and lots of disabled access if needed. Gardens are well kept and parking is free! At the time we went there was some vintage cars lined up on the grass which was nice to have a look at. Not sure if it was a little meet up but still nice to see!

Sarah H — Google review

Lovely for walks. A little walled garden, a lake, nice places to sit and take in nature. Lots of trees etc.. safe for dogs and families to stroll around for a while and enjoy. Cute little tea room building and outdoor areas for when the weather is good where you can get snacks and drinks. Good parking close to everything for free.

Very pretty place, very picturesque. Beware the stuffed fox holding in the trees.

Lee B — Google review

Just so much that is so beautiful about this place, so many trails so many beautiful sitting spots. Plenty of parking, tea room with a lovely garden to sit in and enjoy your cuppa, lovely lake and so many amazing big trees with loads of statues 🤗

A beautiful place in the sunshine, plenty of parking, and a walled cafe garden. The second largest park in Ireland after the Phoenix Park

Mark T — Google review

Wonderful place with history. Unfortunately the house is currently under refurbishment and therefore closed to visitors. However, the café and the huge parks with lake are fully accessible and worth the drive alone. One star reduction because of the closed house.

Sören M — Google review

Lovely walk, free to see with a beautiful house and lake to walk around and a lovely cafe to get a coffee

Clare S — Google review

Emo park surprises not only with beautiful nature and wonderful views, but also with delicious, high-quality goods. The combination of pineapple and prosecco is surprising and wonderfully refreshing. It's worth coming here

Anna G — Google review

It's a fantastic place to walk in the nature, go around the lake, visit the walled garden, and have a beverage and pastries in the cafe, small but nice tables outside, with a good variety of food and drinks, alongside a gift shop. There is an office that will give you information and map. Very nice staff.Unfortunately the house is closed for repairs. It's good to go by car, there's open parking.

The stud farm offers extensive walks to see the horses in paddocks and stables, while the St Fiachras Garden features a fairy trail for spotting fairies around the lakeside walk. Families can explore the famous Japanese gardens with bridges and pathways, providing an enjoyable experience for kids. If you love horses, and beautiful gardens, then this is the place for you. Stunning setting, beautifully presented, and just so much to see. A picture around every corner you turn. If you have a thing for horses, you will love this even more, as there are horses, horses, and more horses everywhere. It is very well priced, the food is a bit pricey, but absolutely fantastic. All In all, a highly recommended experience.

Pristine facilities with lovely grounds to walk about. Interesting view into life on a stud farm. The Japanese gardens are small but well maintained with careful attention to detail. There is a small gift shop for memorabilia and a nice restaurant with a good choice of food. Plenty of parking available when we went. Well worth a visit.

John B — Google review

Lovely place to spend a couple of hours! Great for kids as there is a playground and fairy garden. Also very easy to get close to the horses. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful place on our doorstep. Well worth a visit if you’re in Kildare.

Jason R — Google review

A fabulous layout, the gardens are intricate and interesting. There are lots of fun surprises in the layout of the Japanese gardens too, we had small children with us and they were safe and able for all the steps and climbs. I would say some of it isn’t suitable for prams or wheelchairs but a lot of the grounds are. The plant diversity was wonderful. The food in the cafe on the grounds is more dinner food, it is quite expensive but the portions are big and the food is well worth it. The staff are polite and the cafe and grounds are very clean.

Laura J — Google review

I went into this knowing very little about what to expect and this was wonderful! Harry gave us a little tour that was so much fun! We learned the history and about the horses. Next we did the racehorse experience and had a blast. We were able to walk around and see the foals that were in the fields. We ended with the Japanese gardens which were gorgeous! Definitively worth the visit.

Superb day out.First time here. Our guide Sue was excellent. Great stories well paced. Very amusing. .The interactive experience was really great. . The Japanese gardens were excellent and we got a warm sunny day. We at e in the restaurant which was excellent but a little bit pricey. (9.00 euro for a sausage roll ,chips and a side salad) but the staff we very helpful and friendly.Everything was spotless and clean toilets always a good sign.

What a gem! Perfect for horse and flower lovers of all ages. The tour was the perfect length with excellent information and humor. We even got to see and pet "Tommy the Teaser". Seeing all of the horses in their paddocks was amazing. Surprisingly laid back about walking the grounds. Lovely gift shop and cafe. The Japanese gardens were quite extensive. Beautiful flowers and layout. I feel like for the price of admission, you definitely get your money's worth!

Bailey Q — Google review

The National Stud and Japanese Gardens are perfect for a day out, especially if the weather is good. There is a tour and interactive experience available in the Stud and a chance to meet some famous retired race horses. The Japanese Gardens are beautiful and well worth making time to see. And although some of the paths can be uneven, it's still accessible to all levels of mobility. The cafe and restaurant provide the ideal place to stop and refuel, with both indoor and outdoor seating to allow for all weather's.

Mary K — Google review

Beautiful grounds to walk and the cafe on site has lovely food too. Great for a nice day out, very tranquil and relaxing place to be. Plenty of benches to sit down and enjoy the wildlife and scenery. Really great spot, ample parking too.

Very nice place, especially if you are 'in' to horses and horse racing. I enjoyed looking at the horses, the Japanese garden was my favourite feature here. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely place, both the gardens and the stud are well worth your time. The garden is beyond stunning and I highly recommend timing yourself to get one of the guided tours, it's well worth it. Puts the whole place into perspective. Very friendly and helpful staff. I've been a few times but this was my partners first trip.

An excellent trip out....Brilliant for the kids whether the kids or yourself are into horses or not. Beautiful landscaping and walks around the paddocks with one of the creamiest 99 ice creams I've had in a while. The Irish Horse Racing Experience is a. Excellent tour of Ireland and our love affair with the Sport of Kings. Kids were totally bowled over with the foals. The Japanese Gardens are beautifully serene and very soulful....Well worth the money

What an amazing experience!!We are horse owners back in Canada and just happened to stumble upon the National Stud as it was my Daughter's birthday and she wanted to see some horses in Ireland. We couldn't have been happier that we did. A great learning experience and just overall awe at the effort and knowledge this facility has.I highly recommend the tour, and the horse racing experience, although the horse racing at the end can be a little rough.

Todd M — Google review

Such beautiful surroundings and magnificent horses. We had a fabulous time and great fun in the experience. The gardens are absolutely stunning. The stallions, mare's and foals were stunning. Well worth the visit

Louise O — Google review

Lovely place to visit. The scenery and gardens are just beautiful 😍. Great tour with very interesting facts about horse breeding. You can also do the Interactive Racehorse Experience and learn how to breed your own horse and then race it. Great fun 😃

Evelyn S — Google review

Really enjoy our trip the the Irish National stud and Japanese Gardens! Despite the weather being typically Irish, the overall experience was great. We started by visiting the new racing experience exhibition, then we walked around the stud, walking through the parks and getting to be up close and personal with the studs mares, foals and stallions. We didn’t get a tour but the map provides a great overview of the area making sure you don’t miss anything. We finished our trip by grabbing a coffee in the cafe which we drank while walking through the self guided Japanese gardens. 10/10 would recommend, not my first visit and won’t be my last!

Ciaran S — Google review

A beautiful place to visit for a walk or a day out with the family. Amazing gardens, and you also get to see fabulous houses in stables and out in the paddocks. The playground for children is safe and has loads to amuse, including sandboxes. The gardens offer a feast for the eyes and are a place of zen and calm.Finishing off your day in the restaurant where they serve wholesome dinners, sweet treats, and the best coffee ever!I've become a yearly ticket holder because I love it so much, and it's great value, but you can also pay on the day.A must see if u visit Kildare

Sinead C — Google review

Had a lovely time wandering around. There were two foals born the day before, which was nice to see. There is a lovely Japanese garden and a fairy trail for the children to follow. Also a play area and somewhere to eat and a gift shop.

We loved our visit here earlier this month.🐎 We ended up spending 3 hours here & could have easily spent more time.🥰 Such beautiful grounds to walk around & you can get close enough to a lot of the horses to be able to give them a pet which was lovely.🥰🐴 The ice-cream was out of this world!🤩🍦

Wonderful Tour Guide, lovely grounds with Japanese Garden. Learn the history of the Studs and breeding process. We were able to see one of the Top studs , some future baby studs....

SHARON — Google review

We were lucky enough to fit this in before our trip to the airport and I wish we'd had 2 or 3 more hours. It is an incredible facility. The animals are clearly well looked after. We missed the gardens because I lingered too long in the interactive experience and visiting the horses :)There were lots of babies and moms as they haven't been weaned yet this time of year. The weather was gorgeous which made for an even better experience. The food was good and they had plenty of gluten free options. Our baby even got to pet a million dollar retired race horse (exercising caution of course) he LOVED it.Incredible to see. Highly recommend.

It was quick getaway for the bank holiday weekend. Typical Irish weather with rains, but I must say we really enjoyed our visit.Saw the stallions and the stud farm. Japanese Garden was my favourite. It was truly an adventure walking though the garden. It is well designed and laid out. Will recommend for a nice family outing.

Interesting Irish National Stud & Gardens in Kildare, for which an experienced guide provided us with a very informative tour and educational session on the stud and bloodstock business of champion stallions of which Irish National Stud & Gardens has amongst the World's Finest Stallions, and hard working mares who will be mated in the stallion's numerous coverings (which may cost up to 300,000 for prize winning race horses) during the breeding season. We saw adorable frolicking foals in a pasture. We were thrilled to be able to pet the Living Legends. There is a school attracting international students from many countries such as Singapore. The grounds and gardens are very beautiful, for taking picturesque photographs. They have a lovely giftshop.Helen

Absolutely recommend! We pre-booked our tickets and saved a little bit on admission fees. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Immaculate, clean facilities and grounds. I highly recommend doing the guided tour. We learned a lot about how the operation and horses are managed. You get the opportunity to visit and spend some time with the horses, which is what we were hoping for!

Justina R — Google review

It is a lovely place to walk around but I cannot justify the price , besides some horses and a really small Japanese garden there’s nothing else to see, 22€ for an adult it’s just way to much for being in there for an hour or so

Dumitrita R — Google review

Beautiful Japanese gardens. Lots of wildlife, swans, ducks, geese & an array of different birds. Lovely stallions & mares, who have made history at our well established horse racing. Did the tour with Leoni, the guide. Her knowledge of the horses, her clear coherent presentation, was fabulous. The large group enjoyed her. My group left, thinking Leoni should be on "Radio Eireann"

This was a great experience. We paid extra for the guided tour and Japanese gardens along with the horse riding experience.Katie was a great tour guide and a lovely girl! The tour was fantastic and we learnt a lot.The horse riding experience was so much fun, and I'd highly recommend it!The Japanese gardens are lovely, and there's loads of hidden paths around it.Overall, the whole day was fantastic, and I'd recommend it for a family day out!

Well worth a visit. I highly recommend joining a tour if you can, as it was very informative and interesting. Lovely grounds to walk around and plenty to see to keep you occupied for a couple of hours. If you are going with children, then the interactive museum ticket is a good add-on. The cafe was really good - the soup I had was absolutely delicious!

Fantastic experience. We were here for 2 hours but could have spent several more. The horse experience is the best I've ever seen. David gave us an amazing tour and it's great to visit at this time of year with all of the foals. So much to see and do here and the history of the stud is very interesting. 👍👍

Amazing experience! Japanese gardens are beautiful. We chose to go with guided tour of grounds and it was a great experience. Tour guide was amazing and friendly. Race course experience was new and exciting activity for me ,especially the actual race at the end. Overall a great day out. The only downside if any is how restaurant is organised. There is a huge hold up at the till . Other than that, its a place everyone should visit.

Newbridge Silverware houses a stylish visitor centre comprising of a homeware and jewellery store, a restaurant, and a fashion museum. The store provides an immersive browsing experience with an extensive selection of gorgeous Christmas tree decorations making it the perfect place to find unique gifts for loved ones. The staff are always welcoming, and the cafe is highly recommended for those looking to grab a bite. Upstairs in the museum of style icons, visitors can marvel at iconic fashion pieces from past eras.

Their museum of style icons is very interesting. Clothing and ephemera of famous people on display.Their ‘pre loved’ antiques (NOT their products I might add) department is a bit of a joke with prices so high, items are 5 to 10 times the price compared what you’d buy the stuff for on auction websites!

Andre D — Google review

The only people who want to be here is the older demographic going bananas over the prices of items here. I’m pretty sure the staff are pretty much done and ready to push everything online so they don’t need to engage the masses. One point less for the creepy Xmas themed area and the green handed mannequins looking like the grinch. In June.Maybe I just don’t get this one…

I love these products. High quality at affordable prices. I’ve order cutlery and jewellery numerous times and I’m never disappointed. Just ordered some cutlery yesterday for a wedding gift. So much to offer and so tempting. I’m confident it will arrive in a few days. I happened upon the shop whilst visiting Dublin last year. So impressive and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Perhaps I’ll return one day. At least, I’m confident that my online browsing will keep me happy. Many thanks. Ann Armour

A lovely afternoon tea, but I didn't have an option to make any changes. My booking was taken over the phone and I wasn't asked did I want to make any changes. I was stuck with what we got ok the day. So, if you go please tell them what you do and don't eat.Lovely food, but I found the portions small. We were actually hungry after. A lovely room and a nice idea to do, but don't go if you are already hungry!!!Also, take out the scribbled bit on the note in the table and just rewrite it. Keep the standard up.

🎄(Translated by Google)If you are in the region, you should take a look at this factory. It's always nice when you can support the local economy. Here everything is produced in a great industrial/artisanal way. And that has probably been the case for quite some time. In addition to an interesting museum that can be visited in 10 minutes and tells a lot of interesting things about fashion and film releases, you can also buy small gifts for people at home. The Christmas collections are wonderful silverware at a very reasonable price and are particularly original. There you will find something for your home Christmas tree or to hang in the window. 🎄

Value for money is an understatement. 2 adults and 2 kids we paid 33euro, and got a train ride, a treasure hunt, crazy golf, outdoor park, inside play area, farm area with some animals to look at, and the most beautiful forest walk (suitable for buggies also) along some of the most amazing views and scenery. On any dry day in ireland this is definitely worth a visit. There was so much to see and do, we spent 4 hours here. There's a coffee shop inside with a great menu choice. Plenty of seating and plenty of space. Plenty of car parking spaces also.

Really fantastic place to while away a few hours with kids. Not just a fantastic outdoor and indoor play area and small petting farm but also some pretty excellent heritage areas giving broad strokes looks at the areas ties to the early Christian period, the 1798 rebellion, famine times and the consignment of the Irish to Australia and finally the bog itself and what it meant to Lullymore and greater Ireland. Well worth the admission price.

A great place to have a family outing. We celebrated a birthday here. The place is huge with a lot of places to sit. The toilets are cleaned very well. They also offer a train ride for the kids and adults. There is plenty of parking lots. There are many areas for the kids to play.

Wonderful visit. Interesting walking routes, plenty of attractions, and a tasty lunch with a cup of coffee. Well worth a visit.

Easter Bunny and Fairies were so good with the kids!! We spent a good deal of time here, so much to do, making it such good value.Food mediocre, queuing system a bit confusing. Staff very friendly . Kept very clean.

Very nice place for a visit. Coffee shop and light snacks. Very interesting to learn about the bogs. Boardwalk goes through a portion of the bogs. The train was a nice way to end the visit.

Such a lovely place! We spent only 2 hours there but wasn't enough! We have to go back!!!

So much fun! Very exciting place. Interactive. Beautiful bog of Allen! Great for kids. We went recently and were the only people in the park. Awesome experience. Fairy trail is enchanting.

Lullymore a great day outAugust 2023Kids had a brilliant time on the train, in the houses, in the playground and with the animals. The kids and ourselves learned such a lot about history. We went for a short walk around the bog and ate some lovely blackberries. The fairy village was a big hit with the younger two. The older boys had great fun playing golf. We had lovely chicken and chips in the cafe along with Coke and Fanta. Everyone had a really great day.

Mary D — Google review

Absolute gem of a place! There's so much to see and do and it's just lovely! Honestly the best indoor playground ever and the walks are pretty and interesting. Fantastic family day out!

Was here once before and then back today 31st March for the Easter event! I just wanted to say a massive thank you to all the staff who are so welcoming and friendly 😄 The lovely fairy, the Easter bunny and Alice made our little Maya's day today ❤️ they were so attentive and lovely they really made her feel special and the experience with them all was so magical ✨🐇The staff are all so friendly it's so refreshing and makes you feel welcomed! The man who greeted us on arrival to tell us about the event and the train driver also were so lovely and chatted away to our very excited little girl.Absolutely amazing time today thank you to you all! Will definitely be back again! Would recommend this location to everyone as we really enjoy it.

Lullymore Heritage is a great place for spending time with children. They have guides to show and tell all of the history. There is a playground, some animals, some trees which are 3,4 hundred years old. Fairy's house. I Really enjoy this place.

Highly recommend all year around but especially the Halloween Happenings! It's really fun experience. If you get on in a nice weather it's fantastic with the autumn colours.

Such an incredible place. We traveled from meath and was so worth it. Best indoor play centre. So clean and so modern. So educational the big trail and highlights around the centre. The mini golf is great and incredible large outdoor play area. Staff were so helpful and friendly. Great day out!

Georgia W — Google review

Great spot for a family day out. One of the best play centres I’ve been to, a well maintained outdoor playground and crazy golf to boot. Educational content with audio / video throughout the site, interesting for all ages. Bog walkway is well maintained and exhibits / displays along the way. Very reasonably priced and everything is kept tidy. Wish the old railway was operational.

Ardi M — Google review

A fantastic heritage center just to explore and learn, they also organise special themed events throughout the year and this halloween event is fantastic, fun and frightening for kids of all ages. We are regular visitors and with good weather expect to use up all your visiting time.

Great day out with the family. There's plenty to do for the kids with an indoor and outdoor playground, mini golf, a train around the bog, a lake, several historical cottages, woodlands and boglands to walk, etc.

Daniel F — Google review

Fantastic place to go for a day out with the kids. Very decent prices. There is something for every age and I can see us coming back a few times as the kids grow and get interested in the history of the place more. The walk on the bog land is fabulous. Shame that the railway train seems to have been decommissioned. The "train" on wheels was still working though. Nice for a break from walking but only 10 minutes long and not that much to see from it when compared to the bog land walk. So much to do, we didn't even get to see the farm animals bar the horses or the indoor playground.

Julie S — Google review

We went to Lullymore as a family of 6 with our 4 boys aged 9,3,5 and 6 weeks. I can honestly say we had a great time the weather was fab. We loved the fairy trail clues to the dragonfly and the train. The highlight for my boys was definitely the 18 hole crazy golf. Although I would recommend putting a little door at the 17th hole so people can get a buggy through. The playground was great for the smaller ones and the indoor area was really enjoyable for all. The staff we came in contact with were so friendly and chatty which was lovely. We arrived at 11.15 and we left just before 4pm so all in all we had a great day. Would definitely recommend and will definitely go back. We brought a picnic and didn't try the cafe food but can definitely say the 99's were enjoyed by all.

Can't believe we had never been here until this Sunday ! So pleasantly surprised with the quality of the amenities and different activities. The mini golf and train were big hits. So nice to see that all is included once you pay in. We spent a lovely relaxing afternoon enjoyable for everyone.

Claire C — Google review

An enjoyable day out with activities to occupy the kids for a handful of hours. The 18 hole mini golf was brilliant the outdoor play park again brilliant and the interactive cottages telling stories of the past were fantastic, as was the cafe/toilet area which was clean and tidy with plenty of space.7 minute train journey was a massive let down but, slower speeds with more to see or a longer loop is very much needed.

Rhory B — Google review

Great place for kids. Train is good especially at Halloween! The wrap in the restaurant is absolutely lovely. Staff friendly and toilet facilities clean. Well worth a visit

Martin M — Google review

An excellent family outing with so many fun things to see and do. The boardwalk provides an easy stroll around the bog. The play areas for children are plentiful, our son especially liked the Funky Forest. Nice space for the adults to relax and enjoy a meal or coffee. Informative displays showing the history and importance of the bog for the area. Well worth the visit. (Sydney, Australia)

Great course , enjoyed my round there today. Good food afterwards and very nice staff.

Ken O — Google review

I've always liked the course design, it's got lots of different type holes including reachable par 5's and drivable par 4's and holes that require some thought off the tee. Unfortunately the greens let it down...any course can have slow greens now and then but I played in a scratch cup here today and I've always thought that if the greens are not right for a scratch cup then that's a very bad sign. They are very inconsistent and very slow, some of greens have 2 different types of grass one of which is a very thick grass that causes the ball to roll very slowly....a real pity as this ruins a very nice course.

Castletown House is a grand Georgian estate that showcases the vast wealth of the Anglo-Irish gentry in the 18th century. It is considered as one of Ireland's most impressive historical landmarks with restored, period-style interiors and a unique conical barn folly. Visitors can enjoy hour-long guided tours or wander around at their own pace to marvel at its magnificence. Don't miss out on taking a stroll down to the river for breathtaking views of the house.

Had a house tour with Celine last Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it, she was very knowledgeable and friendly and really made the tour. The house is beautiful and the history is fascinating. Beautiful grounds with lots to see and do. The cafe is lovely for food. Extremely helpful and friendly staff throughout. Very dog and family friendly

Went on the first Wednesday (so was free) and at the start half heard something then at the end found out it's only a "highlights" 1/4 tourI was looking forward to looking out and seeing Connolly's Folly (a staff member told me I would see it)Apart from this big disappointment (should be full tour for half price or offer free limited ones). It was enjoyable (if somewhat rushed tour, checking her watch and saying need to get a move on) from a friendly guideAlso given a code to see a nice small garden loop with statues and plenty of flowersMuch as I would love to see the full tour, I wouldn't drive from Dublin to pay to see/hear a lot of the sameThe woman on reception not very friendly and came across as coming from her wagesA nice building and grounds, but wouldn't drive too far to see (especially as works going on that block the front of the house)Also not allowed to take videos on tour (plenty of videos taken inside the house can be found online)

An amazing place to spend a day walking in the parklands, enjoying the scenes and of course a breakfast, brunch or lunch from the Courtyard Cafe. The scenes are amazing, the places are well maintained and has a free parking too. All in all a very nice place to spend time with friends and family.

The house is amazing and the tour guide did her job very well there is also a gift shop on the grounds as well as a cafe with a high roof and lots of space. Took lots of pictures and my favourite rooms are the brown study, long gallery and the dining room would visit next time

Great place to bring your dogs for a walk. Lots of room to explore and walk around. Coffee van is great to have for after your walk, and there are outside benches where you can sit with your dogs.

Very interesting place to visit . Our guide was witty and knowledgeable. It is a beautiful place and has a lovely enclosed garden as well as extensive grounds .

Pauline F — Google review

Access is currently difficult because of the action of the owner of adjacent land and misguided individuals who are blockading the alternative access route. However, it is accessible on foot from Celbridge, with reduced gate open hours due to the blockade. There is no access to a car park which used to be accessed from the M4 interchange for Celbridge West. However, people are parking on a public laneway and walking round a ridiculous fence which extends to the field margin but no further. The grounds are worth a visit, but the house seems destined to remain closed due to the Celbridge gate block. Such a pity that the house has been half covered in scaffolding for nearly a year due to the blockades.

John S — Google review

Incredible experience! Take a tour it’s very informative! And make sure you have enough time for both inside your and discovering the grounds. There’s also a nice coffee shop to visit for a nice coffee break. For me it’s a must when visiting Dublin.

My sanity is kept whole by Castletown grounds. I go there regularly to forest bathe. I always come back refreshed. Wonderful moments with family and friends. I recommend visiting the house at least once, the grounds as often as possible. The cafe has yummy things on the menu, unfortunately no lactose free cakes, but they seem to work for my family.

We haven't been inside, but rather exploring parklands around the house. It is really beautiful and well kept area, nice to bring kids for a stroll. Reeds on the River is a great traditional Irish restaurant that serves up delicious food and drinks. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed meal. The breakfast is particularly good, with lots of variety to choose from. The lunch and dinner menus offer even more choice, so there's something for everyone at Reeds on the River. And if you're looking for something special, don't forget about their brunch menu - it's definitely not to be missed!

Very nice place to eat. I loved the breakfast! Definitely will come back again👍

THE STAFF WERE EXTREMELY NICE, FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT, SO HelPFUL. Bringing our drinks, showing us into the bar, very patient. Just fab all round. Every single one of them including very nice bar staff as well as restaurant. Very warm and friendly. 6 STARS FOR THE STAFF!! And the service was very professional, knew all about dietary requirements etc. The food was good mostly for all but one. My own meal was very tasty. Only reason for slightly lower rating is one of the bathrooms was not as clean as should be.

Lucan itself was quaint and quirky with the Liffey running thru it, reeds on the the lounge bar. Was olde world theme certainly worth a visit, but the 🐑 lamb 🐑 shank made good reading on the vast menu , when it arrived at the table not only did it look great it was great , fell off the bone and melted in my mouth 👄

Went here for lunch and clearly given a dinner menu. I asked for a lunch menu and told that was it. Walked out the door and there's a 5 foot lunch menu facing the street with completely different items... Ordered the 'daily special' ... Yesterday's beef and roast potatoes microwaved for sure, had that obvious taste. Positive was the Yorkshire pudding.

We were here for brunch, limited food options but everything was delicious. Very friendly staff and both indoor and outdoor seating. Great option for a summer morning. Highly recommend the sharing bread platter.

Ruchika K — Google review

Beautiful location. Right next to a flowing river. The food was really, really good but what set this restaurant apart from others was the service. While I don't remember their names but rather their stories, the girls from Mexico and Poland respectively, gave us 5 star service throughout the meal. The hostess from Poland was an amazing service person, bringing us lap blankets, hot tea and went far above any expectation we had for a restaurant at this price point. Really great people. Great restaurant. Highly recommend.

Clonfert Pet Farm is a charming destination in Ireland that offers a delightful experience for families. The farm features a variety of animals and amenities, making it an ideal place for children to interact with the animals and enjoy the play area. Additionally, the farm provides facilities for birthday parties and barbecue huts, adding to its appeal as a venue for gatherings with friends and family. Visitors can also explore the on-site cafe and small restaurant, which offer a range of food options.

It's called a pet farm, but really, it's a mix of activities: bouncy castle, playgrounds, crazy golf, and really fun pedaling gocart. There are also some friendly animals. Great way to spend time with kids of all ages, but esphecially 6+. And it's really worth it my kid's was really really enjoy

4,5 star. Nice and very clean place to spend with kids, great for picnic. Good hot food menu, Gluten free fries available.Shop need bit more healty snacks and maybe some good selection of sandwiches will be great (definitely 5 star then ;) )Kids have good fun there. Animals look good and healthy. Value for money. Definitely will back.

Sebastian L — Google review

Small farm with a few hours entertainment for mainly kids. Bouncy castle, 3 playgrounds and a zip line. The animals are nice to see but it's only a small area. Good value at 22 for a family of 4. Reduction of a few euro if booked online. Mini golf is extra which we didn't bother with.

Mrs. K — Google review

It was a great visit. There is a lot to cover. There are many animals and the farm is maintained very well. There is also enough rides so that your kids can enjoy. There are also BBQ hut houses where you can do BBQ, a fairy tales walk, etc. There are enough car parking spaces. I am sure I will visit again.

Sibeesh V — Google review

Good experience!!! The animals are well cared. The indoor playground is also we'll maintained! Really enjoyed it!

Francielen F — Google review

This is a wonderful place to explore. It's like a combination of a petting farm and a zoo!Lovely play areas dotted around. There's even a bouncy castle and a very long zip line! The food is great too! The place is so tastefully decorated, they really went an extra mile.

Masha C — Google review

Great place for kids. There are a load of different kids of animals and most are very easy to see. It's not as large as you'd expect for a place with a Zoo licence (or so I understand) so you'll get an hour or so out of the animals but there are tonnes of other things to do, including an indoor soft play area. The food is actually extremely good, significantly better than Dublin Zoo or any other similar farm we've been to that doesn't specialise in fancy food. Plus it's honestly quite reasonable. Entrance for a family of 3, kids meal, pizza and garlic cheese chips for the adults to share was €40, can't go wrong. We have been a couple of times with our son, he loves it. We normally go do a tour, play a bit and get done food, go to a goodbye tour of the main animals and he is extremely happy. You can rent party huts, bouncy castles and more it seems for parties. Honestly it's all very well set up.My only criticism, and I'm nit picking here, is that some of the enclosures seem to be small and not very stimulating for the animals (mainly the birds) but I'd say if the were larger they would hide and we couldn't see them so I'm not sure if it should be changed or not or how they would strike a good balance.Regardless we love it and we'll be back again, and again 😉

Dara R — Google review

A nice place to spend time for families, especially one with kids. There are a lot of facilities for kids including a mini zip line. However for adults only group not much, except the cafe is decent. This is more of a zoo with games for kids, than a farm. Though I understand zoo like facilities are required for kids to see animals, the concern is cramped spaces are very tough on animals. It hurts!

ARUN S — Google review

A good place to spend a few hours if you are with small kids. It is like a very small zoo with playgrounds, a bouncy castle, go-karts etc. I wish that it was planned differently - so that you could do a loop walk and end up in the area with all activities. Otherwise, the first thing that kids see is a bouncy castle

Dmytro D — Google review

Awesome place to take the family out. Kids will love it! Animals are all cute and taken good care of. Lots of things to do such as carting, zip line, football pitches, and mini golf as well as a restaurant and small gift shop. Also you can arrange a birthday party here - it seemed like lots of fun.

Helen A — Google review

Lots and lots for kids to do here. Go karts, bouncy castle, mini golf, playground, football area, zip line. Clean facilities. I loved this place. I went here a few years ago with my dad and it was much smaller. It’s great to see how much it’s grown. It is such good value for money! Cafe area is great, well priced food, plenty of option. You can book your own bbq space for parties which is great. All the animal enclosures are spacious and clean, it’s a great spot !

The barbeque huts are amazing to have an outdoor party with friends, in a secluded area but still kids can go and get entertained somewhere. The playgrounds are super fun, it's great to have a big grass pitch and also indoor play area for wet days. It can be packed in sunny weekends but those barbeque huts are amazing to avoid the crowd.

We googled this morning. We strongly believe this Pet Farm the best organized pet Farm. Great venue for children.. There are 3 Artic Fox are in resident here that you do t have to travel to Zoo to see them. All enclosure are very well set up. 100% recommendable with many signage well put up. What a beautiful place ! What can I say ?! Yesterday all our family had our annual Santa Visit and chose Clonfert due to its great prices and word of mouth from other families that have been . We were not disappointed ! The farm is a great day out , there is no limit in time spent there unlike other Santa visits and even if the weather isn’t great they have a beautiful cafe selling hot food , snacks , drinks . Their Christmas cupcakes are delicious and look amazing , a family can even get a large pizza for €10. Kids meals also available . They have outdoor heaters throughout the farm which really add to the cozy atmosphere , and a lovely shop which sells soft toys , candles , cards , Christmas decorations and gifts. .The kids especially LOVED making their reindeer food with the elves while having a hot chocolate , Santa looked like he just flew in from the North Pole , they even have a reindeer at the farm ! What was great also is the kids get to choose their Santa gift unlike other Santa visits , they also pick this out at the elves workshop , another great festive activities for the kids. I couldn’t get me nephew off the bouncy castle and all the kids loved the carousel which is included in your elli key . Lastly all staff could not be more friendly , the elves are great with the kids. Making the reindeer and Santa visit is not rushed at all , and the kids can spend ages at the playground and costing all the animals . We will definitely be visiting again throughout the year , especially for Easter and Halloween , and will be having my nieces party there in the Summer when the BBQ stations are open. .Well done to all the hard working staff, Christmas can be very stressful also when staff are so busy , none of this shows however , they deserve a great review for all their hard work . Thank you all to clonfert for making our family outing one of the best days out we’ve had this year !

Brought the kids on their school tour. Very enjoyable, lots of different sections for different age groups. We weren't able to get to everything as its quite large for a small school tour. Kids had a ball.

Tony L — Google review

The road leading to the farm is quite tight from both directions, one car wide with very few dips to let other cars pass. In general it’s a nice morning out, the walk around the animal pens is quite small and can be done in about 40 mins with small kids. Some of the pens were empty (and no they weren’t in the indoor part) or had different animals to those listed, would be great if they highlighted empty pens (only one was) or what animal is actually there. They had an outdoor bouncy castle (loosely monitored by a staff member) and playground area which were spotless. Their cafe offered the usual hot drinks (no menu/pricing for the drinks) and a full food menu (available through QR code with pricing), including pizzas which smelt really good - I’ve heard their food is great. Plenty of areas to sit down outside and a small seating area in the cafe.

They are very well organised. They have time slots, so it's not too crowded. Two parking areas. We really enjoyed our stay. Two and half hours just flew by.

Great fun for all ages. Our 3 year old grandson loved it. Friendly staff and really nice food which was good value. Highly recommend.

Nice small farm with a lot of amenities. Good range of animals. Clean and healthly animals. Hidden quiet gem from near maynooth. Good for families. Plenty of car spaces

DalliKK B — Google review

Love this farm. Not soo much animals there but as a whole good place to visit with kids.my little one was really happy to go there.

Zurrah R — Google review

My children have always enjoyed coming here. They have added on to their farm with new animals and updated their play areas since we were here before. Its well worth taking a trip with the little ones. Great place for birthday parties too.

Declan R — Google review

Went for kids school trip. Very enjoyable but didn't get to see all of it. Kids had a great time seeing the animals and playing on the bouncy castle and play ground. The indoor soft play is great for smaller kids.

Tony L — Google review

I was pleasantly surprised by this pet farm because all the animals looked really happy and their enclosures were large and modern! As an adult that loves animals and loves visiting these places, this farm is my new favourite for sure! And if you visit with children there is so much to do, playgrounds, bouncy castle, zipline, indoor soft play, football pitch, etc.

Maynooth Castle, a large 13th-century earl's home and grounds, is open seasonally for guided tours and history exhibits. It was the main residence of the powerful Kildare FitzGeralds and played a significant role in Norman Ireland. The castle features a museum on the ground floor with informative displays of its history, including interactive activities for children. Visitors can explore the remains of the great hall upstairs and see some outbuildings and castle walls in the surrounding grounds.

Katherine is one of the best guide we ever meet: thx to her we learn a lot about irish history

Marco B — Google review

Maynooth Castle: open to the public for free during the summer. Short tour has a number of exhibitions showing the timeline of the inhabitants as well as some very interesting displays with Irish surnames and where they were in the early 1000s.There are guides you can discuss the history with if you choose.

Patrick F — Google review

Many years ago I had a tour of the interior of the castle and was told that I was not permitted to photograph because my camera looked professional and I would, therefore, need a permit in advance of the tour. I should mention that the tour was free and excellent.Today I used an iPhone but I did not actually enter the building.

William M — Google review

!2-13th century castle in the heart of Maynooth. The ground floor has been converted to a museum with informative displays of the site's history. Additional information targeted to children, as well as interactive activities, are also available. Upstairs, the remains of the great hall can be seen, though only limited explanation is provided and there is not much left to see. A few of the outbuildings and remains of the castle walls can be seen in the surrounding grounds.

Emily M — Google review

A super castle and grounds, you can enter the castle and explore its two floors. The grounds are well kept and tidy and it makes for a very, very pleasant visit. Parking is on the road, cheers

If you visit I would recommend going on guided tour - It's free and you learn a lot about Irish history. It exceeded our expectations! 10/10 must see :)

Ruins of a very important castle with a long, dramatic and - nationally - important historical past. The man who guided us through was extremely knowledgeable.

This castle actually not that good,as you walk more 30min and get to the lake, fishing house and the Carlton house. Lovely walk, nice cafe shop, just pricy. Recommend

Bea E — Google review

Castle grounds were closing but a local guide, Tadgh, stayed with us anyway for 20 minutes to tell us all about the castle, the family that lived there and more stories. Super kind.

Stopped in while staying in Maynooth with family and was very surprised at the detailed exhibits in the building explains the castle's history. Very well thought through and it was lovely to view the ruins from the grounds on a sunny day. A nice stop while in town.

A wonderful historical site not every large from the 1400s with a few battle scars to prove it stood its ground for a while. Its located near the centre of Maynooth easy to find it's a great spot for a picnic too.

Admission is free. A very compact castle. You will be able to leave in no time.

スタバカ(SUTABAKA) — Google review

The ancient seat of the Fitzgeralds, public access is not usually allowed even though tourist information says it is open to the public. I was there when it was supposed to be open and it was closed. Hence only four stars. This castle was built in the early 13th century by Maurice Fitzgerald and became the main residence of the Kildare FitzGeralds. These were easily the most powerful family in Norman Ireland. Garrett Fitzgerald, aka Great Earl of Kildare, was effectively Viceroy from 1487 - 1513. But the family had ideas above the station that Henry Óg Tudor had in mind for them and they fell from grace. Both Henry Tudors traced their claim to the throne from their link to Pembroke. This made them part of the Welsh nobility and, as Aoife, daughter of Diarmaid Mac Murrough married the (displaced) 2nd Earl of Pembroke, gave Henry Óg a claim to the crown of Ireland. Although he was the eighth king called Henry over England he was not only the first Henry to claim to be King of Ireland but he was also the first person to claim the title King of Ireland. Now, enjoy looking at the castle over its walls!

Castle

Sights & Landmarks

Trim Castle, located in Ireland, is a well-preserved medieval fortress and the largest Anglo-Norman fortification in the country. Originally founded by Hugh de Lacy in 1173, it was destroyed by Ruaidri Ua Conchobair within a year but was later rebuilt around 1200 with little modification since then. The castle served as a shooting location for the movie 'Braveheart' and has interpretation panels on its grounds.

The castle is beautiful and free to walk around the ruins. There are guided tours as well to the inside of the castle. There are no rooms inside but the guide tells you interesting historical facts about life in the castle, famous residents in the town and about battles, etc. The tour goes up to the bastion where you can enjoy the sight. It is interesting and funny. Trim itself is a lovely little town with friendly people and nice cafés and restaurants.

Csilla F — Google review

Unfortunately, we missed the chance to do a tour of the keep as the next was scheduled several hours after we arrived at the site. Nevertheless, we thoroughly enjoyed our walk around the grounds and there are several informative plaques near each structure detailing the early medieval history. The sunlight being diffused by cloud over made the fall colors and green grass more vibrant than ever! Gorgeous views!

Melissa L — Google review

On Saturday, we toured a splendid Castle that has been meticulously preserved without any embellishments. The castle is set amidst delightful surroundings, offering pleasant strolls around its premises and along the picturesque river Boyne. Entry to the grounds is free, while a €5 fee provides access to a 45-minute guided tour of the castle's interior. We opted for the guided tour, which proved highly informative and comes highly recommended. Our guide, Margaret, possessed extensive knowledge and skillfully painted a vivid picture of life in and around the castle. Any notions of romantic Anglo-Norman knights, enchanting maidens, and idyllic peasants were quickly dispelled. Margaret made sure to engage both children and adults in the group. However, it's worth noting that the interior of the castle can be challenging for those with limited mobility due to numerous winding staircases intentionally designed to restrict access. The castle grounds are dotted with informative notice boards providing insights into the castle complex and surrounding structures. This visit is definitely worthwhile, especially for history enthusiasts, but be sure to allocate ample time for your exploration.

Krishna T — Google review

Although the castle is not furnished, the grounds and the view are wonderful! The guided tour is required to enter the castle which allows the views of the three large stories of the castle and the ultimate view from the top! Lots of history!

Etta K — Google review

A significant and massive piece of Irish History well worth the visit. A guided tour with the very knowledgeable and witty guide Brenda were very well spent 5 euro. Trim itself is a very charming place and its several church ruins are also worth the walk all the way to the eastern side of the town.

Nicolas M — Google review

Great piece of history, super windy, beautiful early medieval ruins, more then one to see. Don't bring strollers and make sure your children are ready to go up many narrow stairs. Guide was excellent and some beautiful drawn cards and poster to sell of the Castle's early glory. Wonderful city with plenty to do and lots of commerce.

My favorite castle in Ireland!! Our first stop and a fantastic place to visit. Easy access and parking, lots of little cafes nearby, and beautiful grounds. Its well maintained and has amazing employees working here! Its free to see the grounds but i recommend taking the tour inside, especially on a windy day.Awesome memories here, i cant wait to return one day. Thank you!!

Morgan P — Google review

At one time in history Trim Castle was the largest fortification in Ireland. Buy tickets to see the Keep with a guided tour, we missed out as they were sold out for the 4:45 tour. The grounds are free to visit and there are informational signs. Easy parking nearby and within walking distance of shops.

Susan H — Google review

We arrived right at 10 o'clock, but had to wait for the 10:45 tour, as a private group had the first slot. The tour was informative and the guide was funny. Don't forget to buy your Heritage Pass if this is your first stop! I forgot and the lady was kind enough to refund my tickets and then do the pass.

Jen O — Google review

Simply incredible. By far the largest castle in Ireland, with very well preserved ruins of massive walls and main tower. The location by the river ford is also quite impressive - and you get a perfect view at the Medieval monastery ruins as well.Admission at the grounds is free, you only pay 5 EUR for a guided tour around the tower.

František — Google review

One of the best places to know more about the history of Ireland and Anglo Norman era. Guided tour available at the castle, which was absolutely brilliant as she talked each and everything about the history of the castle. You have to take tickets costs €5 for adults to enter inside the castle but walking around is free. Pay and display is also available at €2 for 2 hours which is lovely.

Jithu S — Google review

The guided tour was great!! There were so many great stories that were interesting (and not boring like some of the others we went on). The castle tour was done in sections so you didn't feel like it was a lot of climbing all at once which is great because I’ve had multiple ankle surgeries and did not think I would be able to make it. The castle is well-preserved & great to see!! Trim was one of our favorite stops in Ireland!

Mrs. H — Google review

Very interesting place to visit! The access to the castle is very easy. You can have a walk around the premises outside. You need a ticket if only you want to get into the castle building. Next to the castle there is a parking. Don’t miss to have a walk around the village and have a nice meal at the local restaurants.

N P — Google review

Well worth a visit, you can only visit the tower with a tour guide so be sure to buy a ticket at the gate (5€/ adult) it’s definitely worth it. The tour guide (Susan) was super knowledgeable, friendly and pretty funny as well. Visitor Safety and comfort was emphasised which made for a very inclusive tour. Visiting the grounds is free. You’d need about 1 hour for the guided tour and -/+ 20 minutes for the grounds. Parking is limited but you can park for free in the street on Sundays or max 2 hours on Saturday during the day.

Aurelia D — Google review

If you are looking for a place to visit and learn a little more about our history ,then Trim castle is a fantastic way to do it .You can walk the grounds for free or take the castle tour (€5 for adults under 13s are free !!! ).Fantastic value and the guide we had kept everyone informed but more so entertained .I will say though ,the climb up and down the spiral stairs was a bit nerve wracking but worth it for the view !!!I do think there should be a tip jar for the guides though , fantastic knowledge and funny also .Check the times for the tour so you don’t time it wrong and end up waiting … it’s only half an hour but it’s Ireland …. You don’t want to to be standing in the rain ….

Martin C — Google review

Great tour of an Anglo-Norman castle, if you don’t mind 171 spiral steps. Great views from on top. It’s a great defensive structure and outlook.

Trace P — Google review

Trim Castle was stunning! We chose not to do the guided tour for this one because I couldn’t climb 170 stairs. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the grounds and reading about the different areas within the castle grounds.

Erin M — Google review

Irelands largest standing medieval castle. Actually we were told by our excellent OPW guide that it's a keep not a castle. Built in 1298 much of there keep remains intact. Absolutely stunning. Free entry to grounds but the 5€ guided tour is essential. Then walk a short distance to the Augustinian Abbey with the largest standing wall in Ireland. While there look along the Boyne and are the oldest bridge in Ireland. Still carrying traffic.

Dennis M — Google review

The grounds are open to the public for free, but paying for the ~1 hour tour of the cruciform keep is definitely worth it! Our tour guide was Brenda, and she did an amazing job giving in-depth and interesting information in an entertaining way. She told the whole history of the keep, from when it was built through the changes in occupancy and how those were reflected in the structure of the castle, all in a way that was amusing and engaging to her audience. The view of the town of Trim from the roof is excellent, a great activity for a clear day. Definitely one of the most worthwhile castles in Ireland, especially for those who want to dive into details of why castles are built the ways they are and what purpose different features of such structures serve.

Samantha A — Google review

Fantastic spot to learn about the history of the town and very reasonably priced. 5 euro per guided "Keep" the main residence of the castle. Free to walk around the land though, washroom on site for public use!

Alida R — Google review

BEAUTIFUL. Great to even walk around without paying for a tour of the inside. Gorgeous views from both inside and outside the walls.

Natasha J — Google review

Beautiful and historical castle which is well worth a visit. The castle is in the town. The grounds are free to visit but if you wish to in the tower, there is a regular tour which is only 5 Euro.

Derek — Google review

Absolutely beautiful castle. The guided tour is definitely worth it and the views from the top are spectacular. Highly recommend.

Ember B — Google review

We had a lovely time at the castle! Brenda our tour guide who showed us around the inside of the preserved castle was incredibly knowledgeable. She had a quick wit and enjoyable demeanor! It’s well worth the few Euro or you can go on a Wednesday for free entry.

Carly C — Google review

The castle has an area of 30,000 m², it opened in 1174. Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter built the castle over a period of 30 years. The central fortification is a three-storey keep that's 20-sided and cruciform in shape. The keep was protected by a ditch, curtain wall, and water-filled moat.Access for those with disabilities is restricted due to the narrow, steep staircases throughout the castle. There is no parking on site, but there's on-street parking in the nearby town of Trim.

Erik O — Google review

Beautiful place, quiet, friendly people and gorgeous castle.100% recommended for a quick trip to visit an iconic castle and location. No issue to go with kids, they will love it!

Saman R — Google review

We hadn't planned on visiting this castle cause we hadn't seen it in our searches when planning our trip to Ireland. We did a Uturn when we saw it. It's really cool. And it turns out, it's where they filmed the movie Braveheart!

Shirley K — Google review

we joined a group tour with Brenda and she was probably the best guide I've ever had at any historic site. she's extremely knowledgeable, took care of every single visitor, showed and told us so many insightful and interesting bits you can't find in a book and made the 45-minute tour super fun for all ages. definitely a must and at €5 for a regular ticket, it's super affordable too. you can visit the castle grounds for free, but if you want to be at the top of the Keep (that's the ruin at the center of the castle grounds) and aren't afraid of climbing a few narrow steps, don't miss out on the guided tour. you can get the tickets last minute on-site at the booth and won't regret it.

Charlie C — Google review

Great guide (he was very knowledgeable and accommodating to the families with children on the tour ). This tour had a wonderful price at just (3) Euro. The grounds were also vast and well kept. 5 stars!

Justin W — Google review

Castle Trim is the highest Norman castle and fortress . We really enjoyed time in the castle and around.

Danuta K — Google review

Lovely place to visit to see a real old castle. The grounds are free to visit, but also a paid tour inside is also an option. (4e/adult).The grounds have been very well maintained, you can clearly and easily imagine the castle in days gone by, and there's plenty of helpful signs explaining whats what around the grounds. Can spend about 45m wandering around, and there is a toilet (also free, clean and well maintained).

Dee R — Google review

Entrance to the park is free. Visit inside the castle is only through the guided tour. There's some climbing on narrow spiral staircase in the tour, not recommended if you are claustrophobic or have mobility issues. I did see parents carrying their toddlers up the stairs, so it's do-able.Site is run by OPW, we have the heritage card therefore entrance is "free".Tour in the tower is half hour, a lot of information to pack. Our guide concentrate on how the people in the castle lived, like how they put straws on the floor for bedding. There is also a "chapel" in the castle and we are made to imagine how the service is done. The park around the castle is quite easy to walk, with more information on signs.

Nee H — Google review

Must see castle in a beautiful quaint town. Amazing views of this well preserved castle. Parts of Braveheart were fined here, for those interested in these things. The castle is vast and clean.

Glenda V — Google review

Neat old castle with lots of great stories behind it - take the 45 minute guided tour to get access to the whole thing!

Lovely grounds! Information all around.Little parking and it's paid parking.Lovely walk along the river outside the castle grounds.Free entry to the grounds and paid entry to go into the castle.

Joelene B — Google review

A very neat introduction to Irish Castles. A self guided tour, so not much information about what any particular room was, or the in depth history of the castle, but very intact ruins.

Rachel N — Google review

This was an amazing experience! We went on a group tour of Trim Castle, and learned so much about it's history. It was fun walking up ancient stone staircases to the top of the castle and looking out over the countryside. You can see everything from up there, the river, both moats, and part of the city. We went on a Wednesday in March, and it wasn't busy at all. We walked up to the gate and got tickets for the next available tour.

Kathleen M — Google review

Walk around Castle is free. €5 to do the guided tour inside. Tour guide was excellent, very informative. Gets a bit breezy up in the castle even on a nice day. 86 winding steps to go up it and down again. Enjoyable morning
